Default Pic of my Euro buck mount!

Dustin did an awesome job on this, can't wait to get it on the wall and then I'll take a better pic but while the leather dries here's a sneak peak!!

Nice, what did you use to bleach the skull cap? I'm doing one of the buck I got this year.

Default euro mount

It's closer to a Euro mount than you think!! A true European mount has the skull cut in half-usually through the eye sockets and under the ridge of the "nose bone" In North America people usually plunk the whole skull on a board and call it a euro mount-terrible!! It's actually a whitened skull and nothing more. European mounts are also put on gorgeous hand carved plaques-the dimensions are 2x the width=the height of the plaque.

Yup normal bleach, but brush it on and lay it out in the sun, then repeat until bleached to your liking. Thnx for the info cchef.

Using "bleach" will in time weakns the bone. As well will Yellow as the residule clorine come out.

Not a good pratice to be using.

I use a peroxide and flour, or baking soda past.
So I don't have to submerse the skull.

If you dilute it and apply it hot it works well. To prevent yellowing over time soak the skull in hot soapy water with anti-grease dish soap overnight before bleaching. I have made the mistake of using pure bleach in the past, skulls really make a mess after a few months of falling apart.

I soaked the antler plate in water for 2 days to loosen up everything and get it clean then i brushed on the 1 part water and 1 part bleach mixture until it was fairly white.

I agree with Al, bleach is the worst thing that you can use. I have seen bear skulls that were P&Y one year that were bleached and the skulls started to flake and literally lost there P&Y status within a year with all the skull flakes coming off. I submerse my skulls in Hydrogen Peroxide (you can get it cheap at Walmart) and for the antler bases, I wrap them in cloth to act as a wick to draw the peroxide up around the antler bases. Works fantastic and the skulls are a white to creamy yellow in a day. Let them dry and you are set.

Just a question for you CBRHunter, are your antlers varnished? A little mineral spirits will bring out the nature luster in your antlers without putting varnish on them. Over time, the varnish will yellow your antlers giving them a very unnatural look to them.

Hope this helps you guys out there.

Marco

I put a polyurathane coating on the antlers.

I've got two sets of antlers, one white-tail and one moose, that my dad got back in 1969, he varnished them and they look the same today as the day he finished them, no yellowing. Great looking work you did there.
