Stump stoves

Today I made 4 stump stoves, one I am going to use ice fishing with grandson and the others will use someday. I use a 10- 18 inch round block of firewood. Drill a 1 1/2 inch hole from top of block down the center of the block about 3/4 the length of the block. Then another hole from the side of the block to connect to the bottom of the first hole. I start a fire inside the block at the bottom of the first hole by inserting a small propane torch in the hole from the side. Depending on the wood in 5-15 minutes a fire will be going and remove the torch. The up-down hole will act like a chimney and the hole from the side will be the draft. In 20-30 minutes there will be a flame similar to a torch blasting out of the top hole. A block of wood split up and used in a campfire will be gone in 1/2 hour, depending on the wood this block will burn 2-4 hours. You can pick it up and move it if you move locations. When we put a fry-pan or kettle on top it squashes the flame, so
I pound 3 nails in top of block to hold fry-pan about 1 inch above the block and the flames spread out around bottom of fry-pan.
We fry fish right on the lake on one block and hot chocolate on another block. When flame gets to hot I drop some snow down chimney to slow things down. When you put out the fire, you take the unburned part home and there is not a mark on the lake ice. Could carry one in back of vehicle for beach wiener roast or whatever. I have pictures don`t know how to post. Fire can be started with paper, takes to long. Google stump stove

I make kinda the same but cut 3/4 down the block with a chainsaw in an X,stuff sawdust down the cuts and dump in a bit of chainsaw gas to get it going,hammer in 4 nails to hold a pan and an 8 to 10 inch dia. block 18 inches long will go for hours.Dry pine is what I use.The gas burns off in minutes and no smell after that.The x acts as the air vent.Great icefishing stove.

What you refer to is a Norwegian or sweedish fire log.
It can be done with a chain saw while in the bush to cook on.
