I was down in Puerto vallarta Mexico last year at this time unfortunately I was not fly fishing,but the place the guide to us was called elephant rock it's popular for good size roosters and I did find it on a map down their,so depending on where you are staying a guy could really take a boat out of the marina and head out from their.Im not really familiar with the area I just know that we stayed at friendly vallarta 10 min from airport and you pass the marina on way. Awesome fighting fish we caught 4.Good luck

Did a 3 day 4x4 trip south of La Paz on the east cape in June of 2011 with a bunch of dudes from California...saw tons of fish, Roosters and Jacks! As for flies at least for us it depended on what they were chasing and it would change from morning to afternoon. Ballyhoo sometimes Mullet in the morning with smaller Anchovy type bait fish in the afternoon. Big flies, 5"-8" wind catching water absorbing hunks of hair in the morning smaller stuff in the aft. As far as I know the east cape is the only place where they fly fish for Roosters due to the lack of surf but a couple of guys brought surf rods and did very well especially for big Jacks. If I were to do it again and it would be my advice to you or anyone is definitely hit the gym before you go...running up and down the beaches over sand dunes face caked in salt spray all in 100 degree weather not easy!!

Rooster fishing article. fishing roosters

Definitely on my bucket list. Fishing from a boat versus from the beach. Probably like to try both.

Baja fly fishing company would be a good outfit to look up as well. We were fishing with a different outfit but having beers with the guys who were fishing with them and they caught fish and had nothing but good things to say.

Thanks everyone for the info and the pics... Im in a little fishing/surf town called Troncones, ~ 700km south of Puerto Vallarta. I've stocked up on sardine and mullet imitations... all set just need to get down there now. As for having to run up and down the beach, I hope im in decent enough shape. All i know is theres going to be some winding tracks left behind... mas cervesa por favor!

Hopefully I have the same success you all had. Hope to follow up with a few pics!

Thanks again!

Andy

Not sure if it's on your list but bring some stripping guards or light gloves for your fingers. Sandy line running through your fingers can shred them in a hurry and really but a damper on things! Not to mention salt water in the wounds.

Lotsa good points/info here already.
Here are some things that come to mind;
Take a stripping basket! Often the waves will come up and across/sideways on the the beach, wrapping line around your ankles among other things in the process. Also too, frequently you'll be sprinting after fish to get another cast at them or to get to where their busting bait on the surface, and having your line off the sand is super handy. many other reasons to have one. I hated mine at first, after getting used to it, LOVE it now.

Finger protection mentioned, I think, and is very important. Electrical tape works well for me, stays adhered well in the wet salty conditions, and is durable protection on the cheap.

Flies; sardine and ballyhoo. Last year on the east cape we didn't see any sardines for four months but the ballyhoo were there, wasn't until the fifth month the sardines started to show--unusual--the ballyhoo flies saved us.

Learn/become comfortable with the FAST two handed strip retrieve, Pelagic fish are built for speed and their prey are almost as fast .
Double haul is/needs to become your friend.
Hope it helps,

Have fun, they are a blast!
