Default Fort Lauderdale fishing in Feb

Hi all,

Looks like I will likely be going down to Fort Lauderdale with work at the end of February. I’m thinking of tacking a couple days on the end of the trip to do some fishing.

Has anyone done any fishing down there and if so, can they recommend a good outfit to go with? I’m open to everything from fly fishing tarpon to peacock bass to wreck/reef fishing.

Thanks!

SS

I went tarpon fishing in Boca Grande way back when. Still the highlight of my sporting life.

February is not prime tarpon time in Florida,,, personally I would save a tarpon trip for mid April to mid July if I wanted to target tarpon in Florida.

The gulfstream runs quite close to the South Florida coast and winter is the prime season for Atlantic Sailfish all along the south Florida coast to the Florida Keys. You should be able to find a charter in the Fort Lauderdale / Miami area if that interests you.

If fly-fishing and actually catching fish at the same time (lots of fish) appeal to you, check out Capt. Scott Hamilton http://www.flyfishingextremes.com/ in the North Palm Beach / Jupiter area north of Fort Lauderdale. I have fished with Capt Scott several times and have caught black fin tunas, albacore, dolphin(dorado), jacks and a host of other species till my arms ached and my knuckles bled.

I just booked a Peacock Bass trip in the canals. Should be less weather dependent and it’s a bit of a unique fishery.

As pikebreath said right now is sailfish season. Guys even catch them from kayaks easily enough right now. It is weather dependent though.

If you want to try something fun and different you could arrange a trip with these guys. Fairly reasonable price even just for a single person. Definitely weather dependent though.
