While in the RCAF, a family friend flew the Canadair F-86 Sabre. He was selected to fly for the "Golden Hawks", the aerobatic team preceding the "Snowbirds". In one of their performances at the Kelowna Regatta in the mid 60's, he screamed his Sabre under the draw bridge portion of the bridge over Okanagan Lake.(The bridge was up.) He told us that the Sabre was his favorite plane to fly of any that in his career he had flown.

Now that brings back memories the tutors in the background at Moosejaw.
Transient servicing would have taken care of the voodoo on its way back or from Comox.

I was working in Inuvik NWT. There were 6-cf18 at the hangar. There were 20 men per team (jet). Was pretty cool at time.

Worked on them all except for the vamp and banshee. Headed up a crew in 86 to show the Turks the differences between German 104's and ours. Was on the crew that put a Golden Hawk on a pedestal in Chatham. Worked on Sabres until phase out and then onto Voodoos. As Opa said pilots loved the Sabre. Also first 104's (not Canadian) had ejection seats that fired out the bottom. Took my trades training on Harvards and CF100. Last base was Moose Jaw so throw Tudors in too. Even had a little heavy with Daks and C119. Choppers like Twin Huey and Labs. We had a large and varied inventory in the late 50's and early 60's. Thanks for the memories.

Even though Canadian military doctrine always required 2 engines I could never figure out (other than that) why the F-8 crusader or the twin engine F-4 phantom where not procured in that era.

Great thread guys, love any old CANADIAN stuff. Brings back a lot of memories for a kid who grew up on the prairies during the Cold War. Avro Arrow still rocks.

I was on a couple Cold shaft tours in Goose Bay in the 69-71 time frame over New Year. Christmas and New Year were one week duration vice two weeks the rest of the year. Played fast ball for Base team in summer. When I moved here in 93 my neighbor across the street was an ex Vamp pilot, Randy. He went on to fly the Sabre and was one of the pilots on the first delivery to Europe. At the time he had about 90 hours on Sabres. He had lots of stories on jinking along the border and playing with the Russians. Our Sabres with Orenda engines (made in Canada) were pretty hot machines at the time. Chuck Yeager actually mentioned in one of his books how good our guys were.

The Legion at Innisfail (Branch # 104) has a 104 mounted in a straight up position out front.

I have a photo somewhere in my stuff of a Bomarc missile in erection mode from 446 Surface to Air Missile (SAM) Squadron, North Bay, that shows both the RCAF Roundel and the USAF Star and bars insignia on it. One being on the wings and the other on the fuselage.

My brother spent several years in North Bay On, working for RCAF in the NORAD complex about 600 feet beneath in the granite rock

CF-5 on display at the Calgary Military Museums.

Cool looking jet, but it was lacking in performance and capabilities.
