Question Thermacell

Used my Thermacell for the first time on the weekend, worked excellent but used up way more butane than I thought it would. I used a whole bottle to one patch, anybody else notice this with theirs.

I haven't used mine yet, just wondering how big of an area it is effective for?

i think the basic models cover 225 square feet. Just make sure to have a holster of refills.

So how are you liking yours bear ballz??? did it actually keep misquitos from bothering you even if you had no biters?? Great invention

Default Thermacell

I bought both types, the lantern and the original. Both are very effective, but harder on butane than the manufacturer indicates on the package. If anyone is interested, wallyworld has the refills in a 4 pack for the same price as buying 3 single packs.

Yeah mine works great, but at the rate that it burns up butane I'd be able to buy alot of Muskol.

I was thinking about picking one of these up.
How long does the butane cartridge last?

225 feet??? Holaaaaaay, I thought it was more of a 10 foot radius type thing. I still think i'll stick to Muskol or Off, unless im hunting or something where I dont wanna reek of deet, lol...speaking of which does the thermacell have any scent to it?

Hey Rocky so far what I've seen is, it is using 1 butane cartridge to 1 patch. ( it comes w/1 cartridge and 3 patches.)You can buy a single butane bottle and 3 patches per package, or there is a 4 cartridge 12 patch package available as well. But at this rate it's going to get pretty pricey. The area it covers is 15'x15'

do they still come in for you and not bite? or are they keeping the skeeterz at bay for good while in use? if you dont mind, i was just wondering if those butane cartridges are refillable like some lighters are?

Default Thermacel

Both my lantern and the original do about 3 pads at a time. Just go into the "war department's" camping curling iron collection and grab a butane can if you need it.

It mainly keeps them at bay, but it's not 100% skeeter free. They seem to buzz around yah but they don't bite. I tried to refill the cartridge from a butane can but I couldn't get 'er to go. Seems like there is a one way valve in there. Makes sense to the company I guess, cause if you could refill there overpriced crap for a 1/3 of the cost they wouldn't make any money.

Ours seem to burn 2 pads per bottle of butane. I would imagine that someone will make a refillable bottle for them, eventually, hopefully.

How many minutes or hours are we talking per patch?

I used mine this week up bear hunting in the Peace region.
Still on my first patch and half the butane id gone.
They're supposed to burn 3 pads per bottle.
As the refills are 12 pads and 4 bottles.
Each pad is supposed to go 4 hrs and 12 hrs per bottle.

Mine went 1 pad, 1 cartridge in about 4 hours. Maybe it needs a little break in period.

I picked up 12 extra butane cartriges off ebay for $2.50 ea.
At first I was kicking myself because all the replacement kits come with a proper amount of pads to bottles, and I can't just buy the pads now.
But as you guys are saying, if the bottles are going faster than the pads, 1 : 1 or 2 : 1, over time, I could use these extra bottles for sure.

Not sure what the legality of sending butane through the mail is. I'm guessing it's classified as dangerous goods but could wrong. Be interesting to see if you get it T!

We got a little problem with skeeters on the tundra. Makes for a miserable time doin' up a bou on a hot windless day to say the least. I found that it works well on skeeters.......not worth a dang on black flies though.

I won't be given up mine......I was a non believer till I tried it......they do work. If I was hangin' out in a treestand in Northern Alberta waiting on bears.....I would definately have one.

I don't sit without mine. It is the best thing out there. You can get butane from Wal-Mart that go in Conair curling iron. I think they are cheaper then the ones from Thermocell.

Back when I was in the Army I bought one of the Thermocells. Everyone laughed at me till they realized my gun position was mosqitoless.

I use to get about 8 hours out of a bottle of butane.

I have two of them and they are worth every penny and more. They are not imediate when you light them but 15 minutes later you realize - Hey, not mosquitoes !! They work great. I get about three of the pads to one little butane cartridge or about 10 to 11 hours. Would not go camping without them.

Looks like these might be worth getting.

Do you guys use the pocket sized one or the lanterns?

The lanterns suck......hand helds are better. They make a holster for them as well. I got the white one cause I hate losing things lol.
