Saw a lot of Canada geese a few weeks ago when it was in the -35 range. Bow river at Calgary, at the waste treatment drain off. I guess a few stuck around this winter?

Default Honkers

There's always a whack of Canada's that stay through the winter on the Bow on the south side of Calgary lots of feed available to them just east of the city

Maybe spring is sooner than we think. Closest open water to you at this time of the year is probably the South Saskatchewan river.

Maybe the geese are seeing lots of guns and tension down south of the border and they figured they'd take their chances here. .

He's right, lots of night roosts holding 1-200 birds per at various open water areas down the bow river.

Usually lots of open water on the Elbow below the Glenmore reservoir as well. Lots of geese all winter there.

SSR is a long haul from here. Sounded like they were a long way up, but definately were geese.

As others have said there usually is a a bunch of them that stay but it seems like a lot more this year. I noticed a ton flying last week over the eastern part of Stoney at sunset, hundreds of birds. Because of the treatment plants parts of the Bow stay ice free longer and they get sort of stuck because all of the water south of us freezes.

A lot of them die off in the spring due to starvation and avian cholera.

Default Geese are flying

A couple of weeks ago when it was really cold, I was driving down the highway by Bawlf. I looked out the window and there was a small flock of goldeneye ducks flying by. They were a long ways from water. Forestburg power plant would have been the closest place but they were headed west. North Saskatchewan maybe, or Wabamun plant maybe. They looked lost.

I'm sure I saw at least a thousand flying north overtop of the Springbank Airport last Friday. The sky was hazy there was so many of them.

Was working out in Sask last week and on the way home the fields from the Hat to Bassano were all full of geese. Flocks of them flying as it got closer to dusk. Tons near my house hear in cowtown being on the edge of the river. No they don't all go south many stay the winter every year. Lots to eat in the fields and lots of open water.

I saw a few starlings today hanging out with the big flock of bohemian waxwings that fly around Lacombe.

Spring is in the air.

Saw 2 fly over last week in YEG. They are always "early' in my mind but same time every year. They are very well equipped for the cold with all that down.

Not unusual.
Normally see geese by now, and no, they do not need open water.
They are just fine feeding on , left over crop remnants.
