Default Problem with pike breaking my spinner rigs

When I’m trolling for walleye, I’ve had some problems recently with my spinner rigs (with a minnow harness) being pulled on a bottom bouncer.

My problem is pike often take the bait and cut the line with their teeth.

Any tips on how to prevent this?

I’m thinking that I over the winter I might make my own spinner rigs (instead of using packaged pre-made ones) and using heavy duty fluorocarbon leader material instead of the standard 8# mono that most of the packaged ones use.

See ya

This should solve the problem - the pre-packaged ones are pretty weak.

Default Spin Rigs

I am putting a small piece of 20lb stainless trolling line in the rig
putting a spinglo float on the steel and putting the spinner blade
on after the hook and steel ...
Started using a 3" steel wire leader and snap ( home made )
forjigging walleyes at crawling , doesnt seem to cut down
the eye bite and you land all the pike . Use only a snap
no swivel so the jig doesnt spin..

I use 12lb spiderwire very prone to tangle if not store properly but I seldom loose one to a pike run them up at tobin and set into some big wallys.

I have always use 14# mono on my spinner rigs.....the stiffer line actually will help in the performance of the rig.....you'll notice less tangles and kinking in your line....

I also have noticed that pike will usually "in-hale" these rigs.....so majority of the time I simply cut the line to release the pike with the least amount of harm.....though this will cost you the price of a couple bait hooks....

BUT, by tying your own rigs you'll save vs buying pre-made ones. Again this is why I use the mono, it is relatively in-expensive....then when you buy your components in bulk (beads, clevis's, blades, etc)....not only can you tie up a variety of combinations, but when you break one off, it is easy to grab another and be back in the water in no time!!!

You can buy "lindy rig" holders to store your pre-tied rigs on.....

Another note....I tend to use quick change clevises alot....makes changing blade color, style, and size on the go a snap.....

Besides, the winter time is a great time to tie up a bunch of different bait rigs and have them ready to go....I have everything from spinner rigs, to lindy rigs with varing leader lenghts, colors, and hook styles all ready to go every spring!
