I think you are talking about the Sandhills Jackalope, they are again different than the Boreal or Greater Jackalope which have the black horn tips.

Auto correct! Gets me every time!

I have seen a good number of doe jackalopes on a few golf courses this year but the buck numbers are way down. Studies I have been reading is showing that we are not able to treat women's hormones such as progesterone and estrogen out of local water bodies. Thus turning buck jackalopes into doe jackalopes during pregnancy. This could be a real problem.

Just remember this is a cull hunt. As you stated you aren't worried about antler size. It's all about herd reduction.

Default jackalope

No one will ever give up their secret jackalope spot but , if you go into 248 you will find a place called ..Parliament Grounds... ,good trees to hide in and be patient ...they usual come out about 3pm and mill around . Theres a real nice blonde phase one that would make an awesome mount ......lmao.

There are several around the lease but I think they are an endangered species now. Only 256 of them in Alberta left alive ! Poor things !

Well you guys just keep chasing them around until the end of the month. I figure about Dec. 10 they will have quieted down and using my Metis card I should be able to get a new Boone & Crockett record. But it's also delicious meat. Wish me luck I'll post pics of the kill.

As you may well know most Jackalope are located in Southern Saskatchewan and many biologists believe the originated there, so your zones are on the very edge of their western range. Good luck to you and on a side note use the 1st and last few minutes of legal daylight to your full advantage which means you should have the best light gathering optics that money can buy.

Sadly Jim, IMO many of the trophy males were harvested during the CWD cull about 8-10 years ago. Still the odd one around, smart little buggers ..... saw quite a few (one real cranker.... PM for GPS co-ords) whilst hunting Sharpies in the Sandhills by the Burstall turnoff, but once rifle opens they do become nocturnal. Hopefully SRD had a solid management plan for their comeback ...

hoping to get mine back from taxi tomorrow. Didn't want to harvest this magnificent buck, but he was turning predatory. When your running a herd of cats as large as I am, you sometimes have to make tough decisions both for the health of the herd, and the safety of the wranglers. The cook is always happy when we harvest a few.

At one time I was in high demand ( I'm actually in this vid) but had to give it up after getting married- wife said
" no more cattin' around for you!"
And you are quite right 'ninja, even a cranky old Siamese is no match for a predatory buck 'lope!

I got this one a few years ago while out mule deer hunting in SK
down in the south west corner of Saskatchewan zone 3 rt along the AB/MT/SK boarders
had about 1 1/2 minutes of legal light left
vicious critters
it was putting the run on 3 coyotes figured I would do my part and saved the coyotes from a nasty treacherous death
also got a picture of the female phase of the species

It is obvious that several posters have been pulling your leg as far as finding the elusive jackalope.

Any serious jackalope hunter knows that at this time of year jackalopes are nesting in the tallest pine trees. That's why you aren't seeing many. You aren't looking up enough.

Yeah I thought so too. In all my life I have never seen a Jackalope nesting in a tree.

That folks is the honest truth.

You don't see many true jackalopes anymore. These days it's more common to see the crossbreeds, that have deer antlers.

Had a terrible accident the other day with on. Was driving up the #1 highway north towards Shaunavon when the SOB jump out of ficus bush onto the grid road. Totalled of the jacked up Toyota I was driving. Broke my windshield, both head lights, bumpers had hole in them and so did the oil pan. Over heated the truck as I didn't know I lost all coolant pressure. I asked the D and R if I could keep it and get it stuffed but I haven't heard back yet.

Seen a few "squeakers" in the hills behind my place. My personal ethics won't allow me to shoot until they hit full curl.

Default Update From The Prairie

Boys. First off a big Thanks to all for the replies and invaluable information and tips shared. They've all be noted and documented in my little black Jackalope field book. I've been concentrating all my time the past couple days in the far south eastern corner of 150. Any fresh track I've found the past few weeks has been in this area. Some of you are bang on with your info in this regard. From what I can see they like to travel in a fairly tight circuit, moving in and out of the north east corner of the base. I came across a large set of tracks in the sand mid afternoon yesterday in a small depression on a wind swept west facing hillside. It was obvious in the sand that the critter was dragging his feet. I'm thinking it's a mature Jackalope buck, so I take up the trail and follow. The wind was blowing pretty good making staying on the track in the soft sand very difficult. I lost it at one point for nearly an hour. Fortunately I was able to cut it again about an hour before last light cresting a hill and heading due east. I could see with my binos from the leeward side of the hill the track lead lazily down through the sand and into a patch of silverberry brush. Big old feet still dragging. I glassed the area for close to a half hour, but with light fading fast I wanted to have a better look at the tracks down below where they entered the silverberry. I followed the track down right up to the brush edge. At the edge of the patch I found a ripped up bush shin high, rubbed right down, shreds of fresh bark at the base. From my knees while inspecting the rub, deeper into the patch I could see a freshly broken piece of branch on a little bigger bush. Lickin branch, could it be? On my hands and knees I crawled deeper into the brush. Sure enough a scrape the size of a car hood. I couldn't believe how torn up the ground was. I've seen some monster whitetail scrapes in the big bush of northern Alberta that would be comparable, but for the size of these critters I was amazed how the area was worked up. Needless to say, I was pretty Jacked. I backed out of the area and didn't sleep a wink last night in anticipation of today's hunt. I was back in the same area an hour and half before legal light this morning with good wind. I spent the majority of the morning glassing the area with all the sign and didn't venture too far off where I figured they are coming in and out of the base. No fresh track today. I thought best to stay away from the scrape I found and maybe sneak back in there mid day in the next day or so to see if it's been freshened. Still not a sighting in close to 4 months now, but after the fresh sign I found yesterday I feel I'm definitely on to a good buck residing in the area. I just need to continue to put in the time. Again, any help as to what I should or should not be doing at this point would be appreciated. After all I've done on my own here with this hunt, I still truly believe the internet may be the game changer that will help me close the deal here.

Dace

Laugh all you want my friend, but you don't know what it was like back in the old days. Out by Musidora they still talk about the Jackalope nicknamed the "Widowmaker". Not only did he gore 3 settlers, but even after he lost a horn during the rut and hid out in the heavy willows, he was seen fighting off a pack of hungry coyotes. Back then you kept your children close.

Refer or reefer to post number 10 and see for yourself!
Then again you two doubters are spending to much time on the internet surfing porn or maybe A/0 longer than is necessary .
You should check the regs a little closer and bag limits before the NDP bans the hunting/ trapping of the critters.
I did see one once near the Finegan Ferry ...but it was gone before I could get a count on the whiskers.
Good Hunting Boyz!

Saw this one above treeline on the east slopes. I let him walk as it was hard to judge if it was a legal ram.

Daceminnow I wouldn't be disturbing his personal rutting area in case you bump him out of it...best to just back off and find a good downwind vantage point and glass, glass, glass. Use those optics not your feet and you will finally get that well earned crack at one.
I am curious as to what you and other successful hunters have used for caliber/bullet combinations in taking their Jackalopes. My own personal preference is my Browning A-Bolt 7mm Rem Mag using 140gr. Nosler Partition topped with a Leupold 6x42 HD, or my Ruger No1 A/H 25-06 with 110gr. Nosler Accubonds topped with a Redfield Accurange 3x9x40. Both rifle combinations don't leave me feeling undergunned in the slightest and both are relatively flat shooting calibers because as we all know hunting the Prairie Jackalopes is a whole different ballgame and ranges can be very long at times. Only change I may make is to put the same scope on the 25-06 as on the 7mm because that scope almost lets you see in the dark.
Keep it up, and we want to see pics when you finally end your quest with a successful hunt.

Jim
