Default Camlock File: Which one?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it in the search. Can anyone recommend the specific file that I need to create teeth on some camlocks? I tried a file that I have in my tools but all it did was wear down the lock to where it was too loose to grab the cable, so that one is done. I looked at the ones at Rona and didn't know which one to buy. I realize that the season is now closed on coyotes so it's not urgent, but I guess I'm suffering from snaring withdrawal already. I appreciate any recommendations folks might have. Many thanks.

you need a metal checkering file. any old file won't work.

they are expensive! but a good investment, just don't take it out in the bush and lose it. like i've done a couple of times now. the one i currently have is tied to the work bench.

Default checkering file

Here's what I found out with cam-locks. Some are stamped and then heat treated, and no checkering file is going to touch them. Better off to buy straight old style cam locks and file in the teeth yourself, as I have had a hard time finding cam-locks without hardened teeth. I have bought checkerin files from Halford, ATA and Marty and they can't touch up the hardened teeth on the cam-locks.

Dremel work good. Never seen the need to file them though.

I've got some case hardened locks that a file won't touch as well. They came on the prebuilt snares from Marty I started out with last year. Just a few dozen so I pitched them.

Trapper gords $5 more than halfords. $61.00 for a checkered file. But I will say I was helped out by a fellow there at trapper gords. There were 2 different files one small checkered and one larger checkered. I asked the fellow about the files and we went to thier work shop. He filed with both files the larger checkered file was the right tooth depth for my locks. He also said not to file right near the hinge only file on the last half of the curve. He said that he was having issues filing close to The hinge. The cable would catch on the close teeth so to file the last half of the curve.
So do to the advice and demo I bought the file even knowing it was more expensive.
My 2¢
