Default If you had one chance to introduce a good friend to Icefishing...

Whithin a two hour drive of Calgary, where would you take them?

I have only gone to Chain, Chetermere and Ghost with my kids. An old friend have agreed to come with me on a boys day out, and as much as I enjoy going to those other places with my kids, Well you know.

Right at the 2 hour mark, but I'd say Beaver Mines. Nice setting, easy to catch fish. Look for 7-10 FOW.

A 2 hour plane flight would be better. You could go east or northwest and end up where there are fish to be caught.

x2 beaver mines.....great scenery and high chance of catching fish. Crawling valley would be my second vote with less impressive scenery.

Let me rephrase that then...you could go where there are fish to be kept without drawing tags like an LEH hunt.

There are actually fish other than walleye worth keeping and eating.

Looks like Beaver has the most votes, even if we don't catch anything it the views should be worth it.
Thank you for the recommendation.

7-10 FOW, one hole with a slip bobber and shrimp (or your favourite bait) and another hole jigging a small tungsten jig or jigging spoon tipped with bait. Shouldn't have an issue. Report back with your results! Tight line.

Here's a couple of shots of Beaver Mines Lake from my first time out ice fishing this season back in early December. That's ice... not water. It's a scenic place and the fishing has been pretty good so far this winter.

Ice fishing can come in many different experiences. Maybe share what your buddy would like to see.

Does he like catching lots of anything? Catching only big fish? Does he like trout more than pike or perch? Does he like the remote scenic vista or houses and cars and people? Is it about driving up and relaxing or a trek to get there? Does he know how to fish or is he a newbie? Does he like to see the bite or just blind jigging? Still fishing or active rod?

From the answers we can narrow down some suggestions.

He has never fished a day in his life. Not sure if he has ever been camping or even hiking either.

Pretty green when it comes to the outdoors. Pun intended.

Then take him where you will have the most action. Open water canoeing so time passes with scenery if fishing is slow. Ice fishing...stocked trout pond or lake with tons of perch.
