Default Tanning

I took a pile of fur in this year to get tanned. I am amazed at how high the prices are here in Edmonton and wonder if there is a better place?
I was looking at a website a guy I know suggested to me but it is in the U.S
Here are the prices
http://www.moytown.com/docs/MMT_pric...urdressing.pdf
It seems like they are half of what we have here or more. Problem is I think they are in Idaho and not sure on what the permits I would need.

Are there any places in Canada with similar prices or is it the typical you live in Canada so we will double the price on ya deal again?

There's a guy in Lethbridge I believe who sells leather goods at some of the gunshows. Gloves moccasins etc. I think his stuff is tanned in Winnipeg. He may buy or ship with his.

His name is Jim Lam. I may have his contact info here someplace.

Maybe H380 knows him.

I sent an e-mail to Moyles and if I can get stuff across the border easily I am shipping it there. Coyotes there are cheap to do and will save me a pile.

Nube,

Just take them to the ATA. I brought a bunch of beavers in one year. I think they were around $60 each.

There are some packaging guidelines and forms for export/import of raw fur.
Better go to the Canada Customs website and see what it tells you.
You might save a buck but remember you sometimes get what you pay for.

Thanks Spruce I will check it out. I don't see anywhere on the website anything about tanning so I sent them an e-mail.

Red bullets I am all for buying Canadian if I can and if prices are close and or fair. I am sorry to say it is a rare thing that I see this and will not support getting bent over and raped.... I am tired of seeing it too much these days and it is a HUGE sore spot with me

I know there is a decent tannery in Cranbrook. I don't know the prices though.

have you tired international fur dressers in Winnipeg? $60 to tan coyote and otter. Don't know about shipping but they easily do more tanning than any other place in Canada. Reviews I have heard are generally very good.

Personally I would not send any of my fur south, even if I had to pay a little extra to get it done here.

Will check it out. That is a decent price for tanning for sure. And your right about sending it across borders. Is there any issues across provincial borders? I wouldn't think so

the price of getting hides tanned has become crazy!

picked up some lutan-f. going to start doing it myself. won't have to stretch/dry hides that are damaged(or any pelts). and would like to tan myself for our own use.

Western Fur tannery. He is the cheaper of the 2 and I still think it is too much. I am trying to find something cheaper for guys. I have a lot of guys asking to buy fur this year and for some guys it is just too much when it is $110 for a coyote

yeah it def. could be the cheapest in Canada. (international fur dressers).

I think it's $60 if they cut the pelt down the middle and $65 for case tanning it. Pay the royalties to take fur out of province and you should be good to go. Turnaround 3-6 months.

If you think other places are expensive look at prices the taxidermists have for fleshing/tanning. $60 to flesh a coyote!! Another $110 to tan!! At least!!

I will support the local shops. When I hear that it is $110 to tan a coyote, I think of it this way...how much labor and work goes into tanning? That is only 2 or 3 hours labour in the marketplace these days!! I do not expect anyone to work for free...I'm pretty sure it doesn't only take 2 hrs to tan a coyote....if everyone pulls away from local, pretty soon there won't be anyone local...
My two cents

Default Tanning

I have done lots of tanning in my younger years ,with chemicals most work fine, hopefully I will try brain tanning this year as I was always going to do it ,basically a oil tan using the brain .Working the hide over a braking beam of some sort to get it soft is the most work involved other than fleshing and putting it on a frame to stretch it out for deer hides anyway.

This is where ATA sends fur dropped off for tanning. Give Linda a call at the ATA, she will tell you the rates for tanning. Usually takes around 6 months to get your skins back.

Just got the price from International. Will be dealing with them from now on I think. All I need it a permit to export if I understand correctly.

Here is their message back to me

" There are no issues sending goods to us from Alberta, but it is
important to note that all raw fur coming into Manitoba must be
accompanied by an Export permit from your province.
- Turnaround time is anywhere from 3-6 months, but sometimes sooner.

Best regards,

Shelly Stepien"

Coyotes with them are $70 they are $110 here
Fox $44 there and I think I paid 90 or 100 can't remember
Lynx I paid $134 and they are $65 there
Otter was way less there as well.

For that kind of difference I will be sending mine to them. I can live with those prices and are close enough to U.S prices.
Thanks for the heads up as well Spruce. I think a trip to ATA will be worth it and might as well drop some fur off with them if they are shipping it out there to be done. I have a lot of guys asking for fur but tanning prices turn some of them off.

They are supposed to be really good at international. One guy I know sends a bunch there and he is really happy with the end result. Got a fisher and a fox going up there.

No offense to the guys who keep trying to make us keep the money in alberta/canada.. I'm getting tired of hearing that. Alberta prices are so much higher than else where.

Why on earth would I spend an extra 50$ to tan a dog to make sure an albertan gets the money? That means I worked for free for a portion of my time today. I don't like working for free..
