Default Kids first elk

Just figured I would share a little late season success my son had this year........after coming on a few successful elk hunts with me over the years he was very excited to finally be getting a chance to fill a tag himself. He decided he wanted to try for a cow this first year, and he managed to get it done pretty quick. We headed up Tuesday morning, found a field they were hitting to set up on Tuesday evening but nothing showed itself during legal light. They beat us off the field the following morning, but with the good strong winds we decided to slowly still hunt our way into them and hope for the best. About a mile in we spotted the herd bedded down, and after getting set up for the shot I let a little chirp go, one stood up and the kid had his first elk on the ground! It didnt require a second shot, but he did send one more its way as it was going down (thats the shot you can see in the picture, first one was right on the money), it was down in 40yds. Super happy he got his first elk, and I got my workout for the day packing it out haha!

Hahahaha! Ain’t that the truth! I was smiling all the way until the last trip I think (on the down hills at least lol). He told me to give him my phone so he could take a pic of me because I looked “like crap”. I can’t wait until I’m too old to do the packing and I can say the same to him when he’s hauling mine out 😂

That's the best. Congrats to the young hunter. Great looking cow he harvested and some good eats there. And a very proud dad. I know I was seeing my son take his first big game animal.

Great job. Glad the young feller took that "crappy pic". Shows exactly what kind of dad he has.

Congratulations to you and your son. Nothing better or more precious than a father teaching his son or daughter how to be successful hunting and sharing the experience with them.

No kidding, she was without question the biggest cow I’ve personally dealt with. I had just told him if he was comfortable with the shot to take any of the cows that stood when I chirped (there was one little bull in there with them), and luck of the draw thats the one that stood up. Couldn’t have presented a better, clear broadside shot either, of the entire herd if I could have picked one to stand this one would have been it haha.

Thanks again everyone!
