Need a recommended taxidermist
I was wondering if anyone on the forum could recommend a good taxidermist that could do a good reproduction of a couple of trophy pike for a friend and I.
What is important to us, is that the artist can mimic cuts in tails, the spot pattern and color etc. so the mount looks pretty well identical to the pictures we provide.
Any help would be appreciated. Currently we are looking at:
graytaxidermy.com
advanced taxidermy and americanfishtaxidermy.com

kyle 24.25 lbs.jpg

Grey Taxidermy does Ok job, but if you want better, thats not it,,, they are more into mass production than artwork. plus you dont have to go that far.
I have seen a Marlin they did for friend of a friend and it was ok from 20 ft away but the closer I got the faker it got.
Another fellow on here used Art of Taxidermy in Lethbridge to get a BIG pike replica done, I think it was chasing a bunch of Perch.. and that thing was amazingly detailed.
Ben is a great artist and you can see that Pike mounted on his Fish Gallery on his website,

or just go to artoftaxidermy dot com

I toured Advanced Taxidermy this spring.
Amazing work.
They do the big displays for many of the Basspro/Cabelas etc in North America.
Their product is top of the line. Period.

Why would you want to do the skin mount?
it will cost almost the same , takes probably 3 times longer to get it back and it wont last as long... the ones my father got mounted, they all ran into problem after 10-12 years. Fin breakage , grease leak, skin blister and alot of shrinkage.
There is a reason 9 out of 10 are going replicas.
No offence, Just my opinion.
good luck either way.

No offence taken, I just don't like the fake looking replicas to me it's not the same. I want to look at it on the wall and know that's the one I pulled out of the lake!

I would recommend looking up lax replicas, and joe Fontana on the Internet they are both out of Wisconsin and are Probley the best replica taxidermists in the world.they both only do replicas, they are mainly musky artists but do pike just as well, they build there own head and mouths out of there own forms and duplicate the teeth precisely bang on,lots of stuff to look at on there sites, and you should come away with paying about half the price as here,
Hope this helps you guys out a bit

I would defiantly recommend Dave Booth Taxidermy of Slave Lake, Alberta. Does a great job on any skin or reproduction fish! Defiantly reasonable prices as well. Check out the website: www.daveboothtaxidermy.com
