Not much for carp or catfish in Alberta. In other parts of Canada there are some and they can get quite large.

Do you keep them or is all catch and release?

There are several lakes in Saskatchewan that have good carp that anglers target. Last Mountain being the best. For big catfish , the Red River in Manitoba. Big being 30+ lbs here.

There is some grass carp right around Edmonton, but as for a hardcore carp fishery here...no. good carp and good size to them in the Red River in Manitoba!

Funny thing is I grew up on Last Mountain, and my dad still lives out there. I vaguely remember seeing the carp run along the shoreline in the spring when I was a kid. Never heard about anybody targeting them, but I saw some old pics in a Fishing Saskatchewan book, and there used to be huge piers out around Valeport, and there were tons of people fishing off them for carp. That being said, I don't know anybody, or of anybody who has ever targeted them, but I'd sure like to give it a shot some time

Question Local Carp

There is carp in the mighty but filthy dirty NSR.
The lacombe trout pond in St.Albert also has carp to five pounds and goldfish to three pounds. Get out there and explore a bit.

Quillback sucker ≠ carp.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quillback

Quote:
The quillback (Carpiodes cyprinus) is a type of freshwater fish of the sucker family. It grows to 26 inches (65 cm) and are deeper bodied than most suckers, leading to a carplike appearance. It can be distinguished from carp by the lack of barbels around the mouth.

There are lots of carp feeding on the surface in a lake that I go to in BC. What tequnique do you use for catching them? What are they eating?

Toss 'em a globug or a wooly bugger, i had great success with geezus lizard tied on #4 #6 jig hooks with a mono weed guard, also caught a bull cat on it, it was the size of a beer bottle. i fished in penticton oxbows, skaha lake and okanagan river.

As for original poster, Saskatchewan is your best bet. Spent many may long weekends on Last Mountain Lake and Quappele river, awesome fishery for carp. Your best bet for 40lb+ carp. This year my dad caught a mirror carp out of the lake. His personal best from that body of water is 37lbs and 4oz. Don't bother with boilies and attractors this area fishes best on a good old worm. There is a few british dudes in that area that target only carp, i think their best catch was around 42lb mark.
