Wolf hunting
What is the wolf population like around rocky, caroline and sundre. And what is the best way to go about getting one of these elusive creatures. I was east of GP 15 min a few years back on an elk hunt and there were wolf tracks absolutely everywhere, but that is too far to drive for me for something to do on the weekend. Also if you got pics of wolf's you've taken that would be cool.

I think that area has a good/bad population of wolves from what I've read on this site. Watch the you tube videos of wolf hunting, some are great. Get a wolf howler call. Look at the topo maps and find the river and creeks or even long valley systems. Wolves are not into climbing mountains and prefer traveling the easier routes. If you know which area hold game, wolves will know to, this is where you start. I would suggest being very quiet as their hearing is exceptional. No slamming truck doors, no double clicking the lock button to make the horn honk, put the phone on silent, slip into the forest like a cool breeze and stay out of the open areas. Game hunting pressure has dropped off recently and they sense that. If a wolf can hear you howl from two miles away you basically are covering 16 sq miles of area. From what I've read they will typically answer your call. Now they are coming to chew up and spit out the intruder, that's you. Good luck.

There are plenty out there. I will PM you a spot where you’ll find them west of Caroline. I’ve taken two with a rifle and two with a bow out there. This was the last one.

Where there’s elk there’s wolves...those buggers do a number on our elk herds and pretty much any thing else they can chomp down on...

A few questions:
Wolf calibre 30-06 or 220 Swift?
Is wolf hunting really any more dangerous than coyote hunting or deer hunting ? I go deer hunting and coyote hunting by Melissa at times and I don't worry .
Guessing morning and evening like coyote calling is best?
Call them with rabbit food -dinner calls, or wolf howls? Or both ? Howler brand suggestions? Time between howls?
Do they come into lone coyote calls?
Guessing open fields beside forested areas is best or go into more trees?
This is new to saskatchewan big game so new to me.

No shortage of wolves in those areas,as posted, the challenge is being within earshot of them at any given time because the pack wanders over such a huge territory.
Baiting takes a ton of patience and 2 tons of work but it’s probably the most popular method.
If you are good at voice howling or use an e-caller you might have more luck locating them and definitely more fun then watching a bait for days on end in -30 weather.
Yes they will come to coyote howls if they hear it cuz they like to kill coyotes,or pretty much any prey calls I spose.....but again, location location location, they cover a lot of ground in a day,and you will need to as well if you hope to locate them with howling.

I like too call them in
here is a couple post's I did
got 2 Wolves twice 6 days apart
called in 3 each time
When the hunter becomes the Hunted
David
Canis Lupus 2 out of 3 is not bad
Got to my ground blind this morning and what do I see
Its a Black Bear ..and not bad size to boot (no Tag)
watching the Bear when a WT buck 6by7 show up (6 inches by 7 inches)
about 11 ish the Canis Lupus(Wolves) started howling about 1 1/2 away so I waited
when they howl again a different group in my valley 900 yds away
I give them a few Elk distress calls
3(doe n 2fawns) deer to my left run up hill and 2(doe n fawn) to my right
wait 20 minutes and Wham here they come on the trot
to my left 3 of them in a v at 35 yards
Bang ones down ..moved to vantage point that opens up shooting field
and there is one running ...slowing down.. and stopped ... shot gone
that's 2 where is the 3rd ..ahh smart took the left turn no shooting field
2 out of 3 is not bad
Fun fun fun
enjoy
David :-}
and the other
Couple Wolves Today (part Deux) Canis Lupus
Well Wolf tracks in mud on road first we saw
oh oh pack of Wolves tracks on road
time to do a set up for them I asked Bill
yep lets do this was his reply
set up on edge of mill cut
Elk distress called 4 times then a howl and another distress
Wham here they come
Black Wolf on the hill in front of us at 50yds
I lined up and missed fired ..do you know how loud a miss fire sound is
CLICK
Bullet out bullet back in a second
ready... another grey and black come over ridge
Bill calls the Black ... Boom down goes the Black one 1
The Gray to the right looks over at the Black and boom that's 2
then howled and got answers and chirped a couple distress calls
then the valley in front was a chorus of howls
at least 8 to 10 more right in front of us
no more bold Wolves
the dance was over
2 out of 3 is not bad
Wow what a week
Grizz sow and cubs on way home
David

I do not want to hijack the thread, but never have hunted wolves so would using calls also possibly bring in a cougar? Then what?

Encounters with that amount of wolves and not to mention all their howling would have to be somewhat chilling!!

I always call with my back against a tree, for comfort of course. A little disconcerting when you get up and there are some cat tracks where there were non before.

If your seriously wanting a wolf and don’t have a lot of time to invest, book a hunt. Otherwise it’s gonna be a lot of luck needed.

Why were you thinking it might be? From the animal or other wolf hunters?

Same could be said when calling while hunting pretty much anything no?
Last animal I'd be worried about is a wolf. Sheesh.

Animal
I have had zero exposure to wolves and you hear lots but have shot black bears with a bow. I only find it "scary" when loading a dead bear in the night in the forest by yourself. Lol. Deer dont scare me either.
In sask we have to wear big game colors - red orange white - from waist up. Red or orange hat. Not saying that people dont scare me though.

Creepy feeling for sure.
A few years ago(2012?)I rattled in what I assume was a big Tom judging by the tracks.I never did see him but he stalked to within 50m of where I was sitting on an aspen covered hillside rattling for WT,and looked like he was crouched there watching me as evidenced by tracks in fresh snow.
I had walked in to south early afternoon in 4” of fresh snow on an old faded survey line, then cut across the hillside 200m to west to rattle in some old growth aspen with good shooting lanes.
After a couple hours of rattling off and on,I cut across the hillside SÈ to hit the line and walk back out. When I got to where I had cut to west away from the line a cpl hours earlier, these huge cat tracks were following my boot prints step for step....so now I’m following him,amd he’s following me,lol
I walked back in to where I was rattling earlier and seen where he laid watching me from 50m away.....and now it’s getting dark, and I’m toting a .45 Hawken rifle ML......I did A LOT of looking over my shoulder on the mile hike out to truck!! 😳

Another time years ago back in NB (mid-90s?) I was sitting on the ground rattling on a hardwood ridge, back against a tree, all camoed up head to toe/face mask et al.I had just clicked the antlers lightly for 5-10 seconds to begin, and I heard a something coming crashing thru the frosty leaves from 100y out.I seen a flash of Brown coming and got the rifle ready up on my knee, assuming it was a buck coming in fast....then I got a wee bit better look and thought it was a coyote.....then I got a real good look and it was big Tom bobcat!!
He came charging right in to 20m then started creeping slower....stalked in along a deadfall tree and literally to the end of my muzzle less then 10ft away.
So he’s staring at this camo blob trying to figure out what I was,and I said softly “hey kitty kitty” lol
So his ears perked up and he steps closer....like 6-7 ft away now...and at this point I had already relaxed and let rifle down across my lap knowing it wasn’t either a deer or yote.....then I threw my arms up in the air and yelled “BLAHHHHHH” or something like that....anyway that lil cat near turned himself inside out backpedaling in a flurry of flying leaves,I suspect he was in the next county before he stopped running...LMFAO!!
Pretty cool experience. 😝😎

If you've hunted bears you've hunted a predator a lot higher up the dangerous scale. When theres multiple stories of wolves killing people we can start to worry.
Allegedly two incidents in 50 plus years and the one in Sask has never been confirmed 100%.
Coyotes have killed more people.

I thought I read somewhere/sometime that there hasn’t been a confirmed human death in North America from wolves since the 1800s?

One in Alaska in 2010 and one they still can't 100% confirm was black bear or wolf in Saskatchewan in 2005 and those suspect wolves had been teased and hand fed allegedly.
Some others from caged wolves but in the wild there's been basically zero prior to the two mentioned above since the early 1900's. Fewer than coyotes which i guess makes sense considering how habituated to humans those buggers have become. When it comes right down to it you've got more to worry about from moose. They kill more people in Alaska than grizzlies.
Zero wolf fatalities in the lower 48 since, forever, and to put it in perspective, 41 humans were killed by dogs in the U.S. in 2014. There's more to fear from Fifi than Lobo.
So much for The Grey I guess. Junk movie anyways.

Answer is Yes .. and Ive called in cats , bears and wolves while calling for wolves in Zones 326 and 324. 6 yds while calling from the ground is very close to a cat .. Even closer when the other one is 10 yds behind you .

wolf
Many trappers have been stocked by wolf packs. Many trappers never showed up in the spring. However their have been limited confirmed wolf kills of humans in western Canada. It is believed that trappers and ranchers were so aggressive on hunting wolves over last 100 or more years that they have learned to avoid man for most part. In Europe there were many cases of wolves attacking humans, same wolf.

Ok thanks for the replies, to the OP sorry i have derailed the thread, but it was a start to my questions. I dont like a bunch of info on 10 different threads so guessing others dont.
. I guess it must just be folklore on the big bad wolves, but i would rather know today...
Calibre and bullet & grain selection
So i have decided i will try the 220 Swift as i will in hopes save the hide. I could use a 22-250 but about the same as a swift. 204 ruger seems underpowered. 3006 too much.
Unless someone has suggestions these are some bullets i know i have and can reload.
204 32 gr VMax.
220 Swift - Vmax? Or pSP ? I have various grains. I have ttsx as well but would prefer to keep them for deer in the 22-250 for my daughter.
3006 - 110gr psp, 165 psp ...
Plan to save the skull
