Default Old Compound bow for Hunting

So I was gifted my Father-In-Laws old bow a few years ago which I've gone out and shot a few times. It is an old PSE Citation most likely from the late 70's. Is this bow worth using to hunt with or should I just save up the few hundred and buy something newer.

Take it to a proshop like Jimbows for inspection they will let you know if it's ok to use.

you will have to save more then a few hundred... if it is a sound bow no cracks or bad string it can be used to hunt with for sure....it worked when it was made it should still work now...

Everyone knows you need at least a .300 Weatherchester UberMagnum Bow to kill a white tail......

Yes. I'm That Guy.

Or, as mentioned, get it inspected and maybe (probably) new strings. Should work with any old flint broadhead.

LOL! Killed a rather mean pile of deer, and the odd antelope with that one's "sister" - a PSE Laser Mag back in the day. Never did hear any of them complain that they didn't get nuked with the latest & greatest...

Cheers,
Nog

I hunted with 2 different pse citations in the 70's. Earlier model had a weak spot in riser just below grip. ( bow broke in half at full draw) Bow was replaced on warranty with new model that rectified the riser problem. If the riser is same thickness below grip it will be weak. If it's shaped like a I beam it's the revised stronger riser.

If I were you I would take it to Jim Bows, Archery Centre or any other archery place where you can shoot it and see what another people can do with more likely modern bows.
If it still shoots quite when you draw it and gives you good groups at say 40 yds use it , why not. Still will need to tune it a bit adjust draw length , anchor, sight etc.
Good luck!

if its that old it probably wont have a peep or a loop on the string.
Get those two things added and get yourself a release.
You can at least play around with it then. I showed up at the range about 7 or 8 years ago with an old bow that I shot for a month before they let me try a new one. Never shot the old one again.
