Default rookie shotgunner

i am a rookie when it comes to shotguns and not afraid to admit it. i will be hunting upland game shortly and would like advice on two fronts. how does one choose a shotgun? its not like anything else where you can test drive a car, take a bicycle for a spin or the like. and i assume it is a personal fit that one is after. i am leaning towards a 20 gauge over under for safety and simplicity. can a person go to a skeet or trap range and try guns kept at the club? also is there anywhere a person can get instruction? to prevent bad shooting habits before they begin? not new to shooting but so far the vast majority has been with a rifle. i am skeptical about going into a gun shop to ask for advice. their best interest is selling me a gun, regardless of whether it is the right fit for me.

Local trap / skeet ranges will let you rent / try guns. From my experience they also instruct. Locals to the club are also a valuable shooting resource. It's all about fit so don't be hasty.

where are you located? there is several clubs in alberta with plenty of outstanding members who would be more than happy to help you get started.

The a.h.e.i.a range at deWinton has quite a few shot guns for rent and they have some very basic instruction available. I am not sure what aheia has in the Edmonton area.

I would advise you to contact a local sporting clays range. Many keep lists of local certified instructors.

If you are looking at 20 gauge guns, go to a skeet range. Many skeet shooter prefer the smaller gauges and most skeet shooters will help you through a round or two and even let you try their guns.
