Any of the creek mouths is a great place to start

as in all rivers in Alberta

last part of April and the first part of May

Pre spawn n spawning Rainbows will congregate in rivers where the creeks run in

when the temperature of creeks and it rises they will move into creeks

lots of ice in creeks yet

with the Rainbows will be the other fish of the rivers

Bull Trout /Mountain Whitefish /Grayling /Burbot/Brook Trout /Lake Whitefish/Pike/Walleye/even Perch

Google Earth is a good start when looking how to get close too these creek mouths

I will use Alberta Parks map then go where ever I want to look
http://www.albertaparks.ca/william-a-switzer.aspx

if your an avid Angler then walking the whole river or as much as you can

lots of anglers get mad at me for giving out info .. but at least I don't charge like a guides does.. lmao

Good luck with your quest

David

from the regs

Athabasca River
upstream of Sec. Rd. 658 (near Whitecourt) to Jasper National Park Boundary – mainstem river (including Brule Lake) only.
Apr. 1 to Oct. 31 – All species - 0 limit; Bait Ban.
Nov. 1 to Mar. 31 – CLOSED
downstream of Sec. Rd. 658 – see Fish Management Zone 3, Watershed Unit NB2.

if your fishing some tributaries before June 16 then your in trouble but read your regs as bigger rivers have their own regs

Food for Thought

David

The small creeks that feed the athabasca around Hinton never cease to amaze me. There is a spot where I hunt in 344 that seems like an awfully long ways from the river where a really nice brook runs through (literally it's 2' wide)... there are always fingerling Trout in that little brook that scatter when I step across in September.

I've come across a few little feeder streams like this over the past few years.

As for fishing. The tribs are good, but study your google map for aggressive turns in the river where there are eddys. You can find bulls, rockys and rainbows in those pools pretty regularly.
