Default Good scouting spotting scope?

Hey folks,

I'm looking at getting a spotting scope to help with my scouting adventures. Basically I'll be using it sitting on a hillside glassing longer ranges (duh lol). I've had a cheap bushmaster spotter from can tire but it isn't the best... I'm not too worried about the weight aspect just looking for something that can get me clear close ups from far away.. My price range is up to $1000 at this moment. Any help is appreciated!

Don't buy a cheap spotting scope, you will be better served putting the money towards a top notch set of binos. Cheap scopes are hard to look through for any length of time, lack the clarity needed to actually see detail any better than binos, yada yada. I threw my spacemaster away years ago when I found that my mid grade binos worked better for judging distant sheep, despite being far lower power. The Swarovskis I use now show me more than I can see through most spotting scopes.

The other thing to remember, especially for summer scouting, is heat mirage. The higher magnification you use, the worse it gets (with any scope). It is hard to get a good image even on the lowest power at any real distance, even at the lowest power available.

Plus you use binos far more than you ever will a spotting scope. Get some good binos, you wont be sorry you did.

I thought about a spotting scope but I never did get one, instead I have 5 game cameras. I had six but one was mangled & I believe I know what caused it now. There is a mamma black bear with a few cubs on the new camera I stuck up 5 weeks ago after the other one was mauled. One cub was in a tree where my new camera was & this new one now has scratches, plus a small hole into the flash. This time I have another camera facing that camera so I can get video action.

Trail Cameras are something to think about.

Leupold makes some great compact spotters. They work awesome, very clear, and the shorter style makes a big difference when it's windy out.
