Default elk in 526

Thinking of trying a new area for elk this year. Crown land west of Hines Creek looks interesting on Google Earth. Any thoughts or advice?

Default elk

Elk west of Hines Creek in 526 is a good zone. However it is now almost all agriculture with limited green area. You will need to know a generous farmer as most elk shot on hay and canola fields.

I hunt there.

Yes, it is good elk hunting. No doubt.

If you hunt with a bow, you have a much better chance of getting permission.

If you want to hunt private land, you should be driving up there now and asking.

In two months, every hunter from "elsewhere" will be knocking on doors asking. The farmers get sick of it and I've heard them say "half of Edmonton has been here asking to hunt "(when actually probably 2 people asked.....they exaggerate like u wouldn't believe)

Some are a definite no. They will be rude. Just say "I'm sorry to have bothered you sir", leave him your card, and walk away. You might get a call .....

Have a card with your name, vehicle description, address and phone number on it, ready to hand to the farmer.

The worse the farmyard looks, the better your chances of getting permission. I don't know why, but there is a pattern I have noticed.

Maybe I will see you out there.

Thanks for the help. Would you be inclined to stay to the north of the peace or south side? I can see a road trip coming to knock on some doors.

It looks like a lot of oil/gas leases on both sides of the peace. I'm looking at where the river takes a rise like a hump on the map west of Hines Creek. Farm land north and south of the crown land. Tell me if I'm on crack.

West of Hines Creek is mostly farm land. Not much crown land left and hard to access. You have to cross private land. Some of the big farmers don't let anyone hunt on their land.
Looks to me like you're talking about straight south of Worsley? Lots of well sites and road. Locked gates. No access. The middle road goes down to the river. Many Islands campground. Lots of people drive in there looking, lots of jet boat hunters. Rough country. Go for a drive and have a look. Beautiful country. PM me if you'd like to know more.

True. It is a long way to drive to ask permission that you may not ever get. But in fairness you can always try.

Personally I would be headed to the south banks of 359 instead. Boat is great asset but not completely necessary. It isnt an easy hunt in 526 or 359. One for permission, the other for the hills u will climb.

I agree. You've got to start somewhere.

359 would be the best place to start. Historically always had lots of elk but lots of hunters too. Like any other zone. A boat would be a great help. Strong legs and lungs and a good back pack!

all the 526 guys will point you to 359....
526 has abundant elk pop and so does 359.
go scout and knock on doors. lots of elk in both. and 50 % will grant permission if you use respect and had over cell # and vehicle ID.

All true like I said earlier.

Dunno about the 50% permission rate though. I lived there, know most of the farmers personally, always use respect etc and my rate was a lot less. A lot less. Most have kids and relatives that hunt as do themselves so they tend to be scarce with permission. Perhaps the OP will have better luck. If so, happy hunting.

You won't know if you don't ask.
