Default Pictures of Sundance Perch Cull

Well Sundancefisher organized an early season Fyke netting on the peach and we got to meet a few people from the community and the forum...We weighted the buckets and I was given the task to measure the length of every perch caught…Luckily there was a young fellow there who I got to show how to hold the perch the right way which made it squirt the milt up to 2 feet ….Every fish was given away today (399 caught) and there were 30 perch 20cm to 25cm in length….

Only 399 caught? I was expecting numbers in thousands...

Why are you netting them from there? Are they clogging up something?

They are clogging up the food chain. Perch stunt and ruin the trout fishing.

I am asuming the is going to be a going for a couple of weeks. So at least once you can count on some help from skunkboy and I especially since skunkboy has waders as well.

Looks like a tough road ahead. I hope you can fill up those buckets with as many perch as possible. PS: - I hope you don't find any pike in there like at Hasse.

I'm surprised with how few were caught too . . . and with how small they are!

Actually the average size has increased from about 13 cm to 17 cm or so.

Nice to see there were fewer than last years initial netting. Still we need to see how the entire summer goes before we can say we are making a difference. I am encouraged though.

Out of 31565 perch caught netting last year we also caught 277 trout. Of which 4 died as a result of the water being to warm. Therefore we will either have to stop netting at the end of June or check the traps daily. The daily checks takes a lot of man hours and is therefore unlikely to happen.

Hope that answers your question.

I would post my report if I could figure out a way to put a link to a PDF.

Good to know.

At what size do the nets catch them? If the average of what you caught has increased from 13 to 17 cm, that would be six months to a years growth or something like that, wouldn't it?

Sundance.. I dont understand why 4 trout would be that big of a deal?

The community paid for them, I look at as that is the cost of doing what you are doing.

If the other lake is Midnapore, they had a perch control program up until last year.....The lake coordinator left and it was not continued...

I was invited a couple years ago to fish it...When I put the camera down I couldn't believe the size of the perch!...10 - 14 inch were common and yes good sized trout...

...and with a lack of any perch control...they are heading towards tons of 4-6 inchers...

I am trying to balance netting with volunteer efforts of both myself and others. I can not check the traps daily in the Summer or any other time. Last year we proved the trout survive after being in the trap for a while but only until the water temperature increases. As such we can not check daily and therefore we can not net without killing many more trout than 4. I stopped netting after the water warmed and these trout died.

Hope that answers your question.

Cheers

Sundance, sorry I am a bit confused as to how far the community is willing to take the killing of the Perch.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Isnt the other option to get rid of the perch is to kill the lake?

Thanks
Jamie

Rotenone scares people who don't understand it. Therefore it is currently deemed a political hot potato.

We decided on the more labor intensive management method...and that is what we are trying to make work.
