Default Perch infestation at Lake Sundance Calgary...time for a cull

If I can get one or two to help me set the 4 fyke nets tonight at around 6-7 pm...we can pull them from 10 am to noon tomorrow if I can also get at least 6 to show up. I am expecting a lot of perch...and by a lot...in the thousands. I am a guestimating 5:1 small/large perch...so if anyone want a giant tub of tasty and delicious smaller perch then you would be in luck.

It will be warm so short/swim trunks is all that is required.

PM me...if you have kids and a wife that want to tag along and sit on the beach and watch while hubby helps...I am okay with that also.

I could do that. I'll see you tonight around 6pm. Chubb, will you be able to come out? I can provide transport.

It's a private, man made, stocked lake in a gated community. No Alberta regulations are in effect.

Some ***** introduced the perch into the lake and they have overpopulated, creating stunted perch and screwing up the trout fishing.

Understood, thanks!

Next question... Would you actually eat the perch in there?

Caught, cleaned and cooked a batch up for my kid this past weekend. He caught a bucket full using an 8 foot piece of fishing line tied to a stick and a hook with an perch eyeball on it. One after another. There are so many in the lake right now around the shore that you can see them off the beach in 2 feet of water. When standing in the water the perch swim between your legs.

Crazy numbers of perch right now...just shows you what a mess you make of a lake when someone throws perch into it.

So now...how many will we catch? Any guesses?

If there are anyone that likes to just gut perch and/or skin them using the 10 second method and will eat lots of 5 inch perch...you will not be disappointed. There are also lots and lots of 8-12 inch perch swimming in the schools of smaller ones so I am anticipating a good haul.

Lots to bonk! Bring tubs and ice if you can.

What better delicacy than fresh whole baby perch, cooked to perfection! YUMMMY.

If there is a way to pickle perch...do tell the recipe. we have enough to start a small business.

I tried unsuccessfully to get a commercial operation going here for perch. I figure a sustained and regular perch commercial fishery would be less time intensive for me.

I proposed to F&W that we sell to a market and any profit first goes towards our perch control costs. Any remainder would go to a F&W program to help other public perch infested lakes.

They could not find an approved processor in calgary.

How about putting in 500 walleye, not letting any be kept if caught? They would chew down the perch like crazy (and grow large in the process). I don't think they would attack the trout, or would they? They would not be competing with trout for food because they would be eating the perch which are the trout's completion. Likely there would be trouble getting this plan done. I think with the extensive netting and efforts to control the perch not having the desired results the only way to keep their numbers down is predation from under the water.

If I was not out of town working, I would have been there today. Hopefully I am around for the next one as I love a good perch fry.

Good luck.

Hi all.

While we caught 2494 perch...only about 30 were keepers. While I would love to keep netting I suspect most people will not want to net and not take perch home.

If people do want to try netting I can reset next Friday Night...but for now the traps are pulled. I would love to nail more of them little guys.

One member brought his casting net. Worked pretty good. Badback bought one also so we are going to have to try searching for schools to target.

They work pretty good.

Cheers and thanks for helping everyone.

Sun
