Just replace the trigger. There are a lot better triggers than that aboration that they have in the 700 these days... Have a look at the trigger tech trigger, timney, jewel, etc...

You'd be surprised how many would.

A guy gets caught up in the action, which happens very fast with game in sight. Our brain is so conditioned to go for the follow up shot that we fire that second round before we have finished processing what just happened.

It's a brain race if you will, with the processing done sequentially not in parallel. At the range, without the time pressures of hunting live game, a guy should be able to catch himself. But in the field, like for the OP, not so much.
