Question Ice Auger

With the hard water season creeping up on us i thought i would start some research so i'd be ready to go when it gets here. i'm going to be getting a gas powered auger this year and was wondering what brand and what size i should be looking at. Is an 8" suitable or should i be looking at the 10"? I"ll be going after pike mostly and spending most of my time at wabamum. Any suggestions?

I can't give a recommendation on brands, but for sure get a 10"! Especially if you are going to a lake such as Wabamum that clearly holds trophys.

With cold conditions, holes freezing and fighting with a scrappy pike, you want to reduce the chance of hooks getting caught on the side of a tighter hole and 10" will make your life a lot easier. Just don't drop anything down it. hehe

Then have an 8" hand auger for the earlier season

You're probably going to get some differing opinions on this one.

Personally I've got an older 8" Eskimo that I love. It's got a small engine, and is reasonably light which is nice when I'm walking on and have to haul all my stuff out. It's geared lower, so it doesn't throw the ice chips like a Jiffy (for example) but even if I lean on it, it just won't power out.

When I'm going for pike I'll just drill a double hole, and then you can pretty much haul 'em up sideways if you have to!

had a eskimo for a year now. Way lighter and easier to start than jiffy's I used. Not sure why people pay so much for a jiffy.. I did the pros and cons of each and I can't figure out why ppl choose jiffy over a eskimo.. My only mistake I realize is that I got the smaller 8 inch eskimo... I wish I got the bigger motor and 10 inch.

I'm a big fan of the Strike Master augers. The link below will bring you to a thread about augers.

I like my Eskimo but wish I had a 10" even for the perch. If your looking down the hole you will have a larger view of the bottom.

Ice augers are like Photocopiers....

regardless of the brand ... they can all act weird at times and
there is no brand that is perfect and no brand that has major issues
or they would be out of business.

Had my Jiffy 10 inch for about 5 years now and it works fine .

That being said I need to clean out the carb. I ordered 4 carb kits
off the net last spring becuase anyone in Edmt. wants double the price
for them .

If I had to buy new again... it would have to be a 10 inch but
whatever brand had a good price would be my pick.

at one time they all had the AV520 Tecumseh motors so it really
didnt matter.

I've seen them all work perfect... and I've seen them all Fail !!!

just like a photocopier.....
or for you farm kids ... like a baler ...
