Wire Worms for Whitefish - All You Ever Wanted to Know - Updated for 2021/2022

Orange & Yellow produced 5 Whites for Scott this past weekend, made a few in a new pattern .... Yellow & Black C/C with a glow bead will try them out this week, hope they produce.

Feb 25th ... none of the above produced today, managed to get 1 on this pattern, slow/windy day it was brutal.

Scott & I are going out tomorrow, made some new weapons, downsized to a smaller hook shank. Found the Gamak's #8 had a nice sized gape/throat which should help with those missed hook ups from the other day ... these should work.

Note, the hook eye is facing down not up like most Nymph hooks, I still had no difficulty tying 2 w/w's on 1 rod & got them to sit perfectly horizontal.

Like this so you have a better chance to get a hook-up it the upper mouth.

Thank you so much Zip-in-Z, Just came across your reply today while going back and forth through yours post. still learning from this forum and the posts. Been trying WW at McGregor Lake two times already and got skunked. Will try Sylvan lake next. How do you work your WW? Still try to figure out how to tie the bottom WW to make it sit horizontally.

Couple other quick questions, have you ever tried using these on trout?

In my lake I'm not seeing whites in shallow, but walleye anglers are reporting seeing them on cameras in 35' of water. Another complication is that I dont really use any electronics, in my experience fishing blind for whites can be pretty tough... So my plan this days off is to try working a small Swedish pimple under a wire worm on one rod, and running a dead stick with two wire worms on a dropshot rig a couple meters away.

It's must easier to get your w/w's to sit perfectly horizontal with the eye up. You can do it on hooks with the eye down but your always adjusting them to get them to sit correctly. Go back to Page 10, Post 297 for step-by-step pic's on how to tie 2 w/w's on 1 rod.

Yes, while fishin at Troutville, however, didn't have much success on Bows or Brookies. I plan to try w/w for trout again in April after the general season is closed.

Try making a combo rig like this, you'll be surprised how many Whites & other species will attack the flutter spoon or hit the w/w above it.

March 04th .... had another tough day on Sylvan, seen a few in morning in 12 fow in Palm Bay but showed little interest, moved to RR23 South in 17 FOW, seen 5-6 Whites & finally got 1 around 4:30. I switch between 4 rods with my most popular creations, the Candy Cane Y/O & Brass with a glow bead have been two of my most productive W/W's this season.

March 09th ... did well today, Whites just came in to the flutter spoon & inhaled the w/w's, these colours worked got 5 before noon.

Candy Cane Y/O was still Mr. Whites first choice today, however, after field trials the new Baby Pink Barbie pattern out produced my Brass pattern. I also missed a few that went after the Pink pattern.

I fish 2 w/w's on 1 rod, they went for the top w/w, Pink vs the Brass on bottom. Found the wire at Cabellas Calgary last week. Plan to tie up a few more in Pink & see how popular they really are.

I fished my last day of the season with my son and my nephew. I used this to get our limit today. Going to share our success with friends and family. Social distanced fish fry.

Showed them how to fillet and get all the bones out. I took the fillets off the fish and they set up in my driveway in the sun.

March 31st - Norglenwold season ender, Whites were super aggressive, limited out in 45 minutes, all from 3 holes next to a weed bed in 6 to 10 fow stayed till noon & iced 11 total, they smacked both a flutter spoon, W/W’s & dead line, it was a BTY fun day to close out the season, looking forward to open water.

For those who make your own W/W’s, these Multi Colored Glow Beads arrived today from Amazon shipped from China. There made from a soft rubber, are slightly smaller (actual size = 3.8 x5 mm) & glow more than the one’s I found at TFH.

Time to dust off the W/W Thread & update for 2021/22.

Getting ready for Sylvan's opening day (Dec 11th) the ice is forming up nicely, this week of cold weather is a blessing.

I scrounged some wire from a Telus Tech when I upgraded my security system, finally found some light gauge wire to make bright candy-cane w/w's with the new soft glow beads.

Made up a few of my go to patterns today, I tie 2 w/w's per rod about 10" apart as I'll be fishin shallower for the first week anywhere from 5 to 8 FOW then deeper as the season progresses.

I use 4 rods, two will be set up with a flutter spoon to attract Mr. White & a I tie a w/w about 12" above. I've experienced a few days were they're very aggressive & scream in to smack the flutter spoon. Then there days when they turn at the last second & inhale the w/w. Need to find some Pink Mag's they have helped during early season.

Will post updates & encourage others to do the same to help improve your success this season.

Tks for the kudos, those are some fine w/w patterns that I believe will be very productive.

I also find the glow beads help me catch more Whites, they notice them from a distance & I find it's easier for me to see both my w/w's at first light or in deeper or stained water. They also help with the hook set, when you see a White coming in & you twitch/hold & your w/w-glow bead disappears, set the hook fast before it spits them out.
