Default New Garage what door size

We are building a new double garage 28x26, we have the choice between 1 x 16x8 or 2 x 10x8, for those that have made this decision what did you do? Thanks for your input.

I'll be putting in a door thats minimum 9' high on ours when we build in 2013 pr 14. One will never regret being able to park any vehicle you buy and/or accessorize indoors. I figure on a 3/4 ton truck with a modest lift and an extra high canopy, or even potentially a Sprinter van. A full size SUV with a roof box is also possible. If you have to build the garage higher to accommodate such a door, I'd do it; you'd be surprised what a lot of potential buyers would think of such a feature if resale value is a consideration of yours. Extra height is also extra room for storage shelves. When was the last time you had too much storage?

But as far as dbl vs single doors.. What is your plan for the garage? Just parking? workshop? toys?

Go one door if you can, I have access to my inlaws double garage for storage(mom in law dont drive) but i cant even get my quad/sled trailer in cause it has two small doors. The opinion on as high a door as you can is good. My friend can park his 1 ton crewcab inside with two sleds or quads on the deck.

I built 24x28 with 10' walls 2 years ago now....wanted 26' but wasnt about to pay $4000+ to move the gas line.

Anyhow, we have 2 doors- 9' wide and just over 9' high (I think 9'6")-using low mount hardware for the door. My neighbour works for Overhead Door and we got the doors thru them and installed. Considerably alot cheaper than going thru HHW or other retailer for the doors...same doors.

Wish I went with 10' wide now but it still works. Went with taller doors as I want to be able to park in the garage with the truck with the sled deck on and a sled or quad on it.

Bad thing is, got a new truck and put 2.5" level Lift kit and bigger tires, now can have quad onthe deck. A sled may fit but I never tried it yet....I better measure first.

He must have 12' or high walls on his garage. I wanted that but my town bylaw said no peak higher than 15' and a which ment I needed to go 10' walls. It sucks in that sense.

Thanks for the input guys. the garage will be used primarily for wife's Suburban and Kids bikes etc. It may have my stock 3/4 tonne RAM in it occasionally. Fortunately I have a 60x40 shop that I insisted we build before the house, but the wife now wants a garage that isn't 200 feet away. Thank again for the input.

I went with the 16 foot wide, 9 foot high door on my current garage. No problem backing my lifted dodge 1 ton into it and really nice to be able to winch a moose or deer right out to the trailer or truck. Also I did not center the door I put it 2 feet from one side, this gives me a place to store the summer car without it being in the way of the door opening. I just put it on wheel dollies and move it all the way over to the side of the shop out of the way.

My next garage will be the same but I would love a taller door.

What Cabber said. I love being able to park the van with the ski box on top in the garage.

As for doors. I think I would prefer 2 doors over one double, but I have only ever had garages with a double door (never built my own).

A man door at the front can be convenient too. I hate having to open the large double garage door so I can walk in or out!

If your garage door will face to the North or West which is usually the prevailingwind in southern alberta. I would go with the 2 small over the one big. After we built the old mans garage we noticed with it north facing, anytime there wasa good north wind it would push on the door and make it bow out enough to see light coming through, during a good snow storm there is also snow that comes in.

2 doors, easier to get 2 vehicles in 20' than 16

I've got a 24x28' garage with one door. I'd rather have two. It can be a PITA to "Austin Powers" the summer car or trailer against the wall because I couldn't just pull in close.

just building a garage right now and went with one door 9x18 feet. I was afraid to go with two doors as I thought the wife might back up into that little wall between the two doors. This way she has 18 feet of room to get the car in the garage.

Due to size i think those are the 2 options, if you have other options I'd be pleased to hear them...

I have had garages with one and two doors. Like the two door better. getting 9 foot high would be great.

If you have kids...one day after the garage is built...you won't be able to fit your cars in.

Yes he does, its an older neighborhood on the north side and his dad was a gravel hauler many years ago so he needed a tall garage to get the truck in.

I second this. I am not a fan of two doors. Maneuverability becomes an issue with anything other than small vehicles. I also think that extra height is a benefit.

A friend build a slightly smaller garage and used both a 16' wide and an 8' wide door. The smaller door is perfect for getting toys in and out. The larger door for vehicles. Works like a charm.

my outlaws are building a big new house near New Sarepta, they have 8 O/H door in total, the initaial plans had 8hx9w doors on the 6 main garages but the contractor said b/c they both drive trucks and have bobcats, tractors etc, they should have 10wx9h so they changed 4 to that and 2 to 12wx9h for backing trailers etc in. The other 2 are 12x12 on a drive through heated attached boat garage.
