Default Killer day on the ice for some big whites!! ( pics)

Decided to head out to and do some more fishing for whites during the week and hit the lake on the perfect day!... Before even finishing setting up I had already landed and released one pig and once setup I had schools of 3+ whites at a time coming in non stop, they were big and very aggressive. Ended up seeing 50+ Whites by the end of the day and landed over a dozen all over 5.5lbs, kept two for dinner the bottom fishing being 5lbs 8oz and the top fish was 8lbs 9oz and 24.5"s long!

Here is a few pics from the day...

Default Very Nice!

Congrats on those impressive whites! What lures/bait do you use for whites? Only way I've ever caught them is with a San Juan worm.

I get almost all of mine on just Wireworms no bait. Sometimes gold or silver spoons.

How do you present your wire worms? Sit near the bottom? Jigging? My success has only been on rivers for whites floating SJW's across the bottom.

I fish the entire water column but most of mine are caught 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down... literally catch lots even a foot or two below the ice tho.
twitch the wireworm like a shrimp and.make sure it sits 100% horizontal

You can use a Palomar knot make it as tight as possible and push the knot until it sits 90degrees to the main line.

Or tie an inline drop shot knot leaving a foot of line for a small split shot weight.

Both work great.

Congrats! Do you jig aggressively or slow?. I've heard stop jig when fish come, is this right?

Jig fairly aggressively until you catch the attention of a fish. Slow down the presentation as it approaches, and lift the lure a few inches while jigging softly. They'll often take it as soon as you start lifting it.

Default Wireworm

Could you guys describe the wireworm set up a little more. How are you getting the worm to the bottom? Using weight? Are you using more then 1 wireworm at a Time? I got the horizontal and twitching part. Any other details? I'd like to get out and target whites next weekend at McGregor. Thanks.

If you use light enough line a wire worm or pair of wire worms will sink fairly quickly and easily , since you will most likely be in less than 10' of water for whitefish this time of year extra split shot weight isn't necessary.

Use a light fluoro or mono 4-8# tie your worms 90degrees to main line and just let them fall.

Keep a nice clean hole so your not fighting through the slush.

I just use 8lb line with two wireworms about 3 feet apart or a single wireworm if they are picky/skittish... No need for split shots etc they sink to 25+ feet in a few seconds and added split shots will just make the whites skittish at some lakes.
