Default reloads: 55 thou' from lands

Compared the 'by the seat of the pants' bullet seating depth on last year's reloads to the actual (as measured with a just received Stoney Point gauge) minimum seating depth for 52gr Nosler HPBT Custom Comps.

Was thrilled to see that my reloads are a full 55 thousandth inch away from the lands! This 22-250 shoots well under 1MOA as it is, so I expect that with that much room for experimentation, I may yet achieve a consistent .5 to .6 five shot group off the bags at 100.

Any you guys use gauges of one type or another to optimize bullet jump to the lands? How did it go? Should I first optimize powder charge (velocity), THEN optimize seating depth? Or the other way round?

Right now I feel like pulling a bunch of bullets....and starting over. lol.

I use both stoney point and Sinclair comparators.

Whith Seirra or other cup and core bullets, I work up a powder charge with the chrony, looking for a short ES, then mess with the lands.
That is, unless I shoot moly - then I jam 'em into the lands so the mark on the bullet is "square" - as long as it is wide.
For Bbarnes bullets, I start .050 off and go from there.

Yeah...what the Cat said !!! Get your velocity first then play from there.
Personally in my 250s ( Savage LRPV and Sako 85 ) I prefer the 55gr stuff ...Nosler BTs and Sierra Blitz Kings. Savage for long range gophers and the Sako is my dog gun.
I made up my own bullet seating device...couldn't find a stoney poit when I initially went looking.
