Best Gopher Bullet
Hello...
I was wondering what you guys all are using for a gopher bullet. Whether it be accuracy, speed, explosiveness, or value what do you think is the best bullet for reloading....
Right now im using the speer 500 rnd value packs... They seem to work pretty good in my gun and are great value!

I reload my own and use the 45 grain hornady sst's for my 22-250 and they are very fast, accurate and are very explosive for the gophers. I just bought some 39grain barns varmint gernades that I am going to try, I think they will work great.

I use the 39 gr sierra blitz kings in both of my 204's. Lots of air time and misting. When the new varmint grenades come out, I will be trying those as well. They will be 25 gr for the 20 cal.

the best bullet for gophers, is one that will turn the little buggers into a Red Mist.

My "go to" gopher rifle is a Sako .222 and I love shooting the Hornady 50 gr SX bullets out of it. Even at the fairly modest velocity of the .222, they live up to their "Super Explosive" name, and as a bonus, they aren't very expensive.

Watched a few gophers get lets say evapourated by 223 last weekend. Shooting the 36 grain varmint grenades. The first one at about 130 yards literally vanished like a fart in the wind. The next 1 was a little over 200 and it was tough to find a fragment of dog. Seen a lot of gophers taken with 40 gr V-max and speer TNT's but I have never seen performance like that. Time will tell though. Thats only 2 gophers.

I am a little surprised with the interest in the Varmint Grenades, they are not even on my radar due to the near universal poor accuracy results I have seen posted.
I would be hard pressed to bother since the 39 sierras are doing so well in my 204.
As long as it is explosive enough. I would be picking by accuracy, then cheaper.

Aulrich I agree...
I have spoken to a few people that claim they are not very accurate.... I think it must be some sort of subliminal thing to do with the word "Grenade".

I would agree. If you can't hit what you're aiming at, then what good is the "grenade factor" at extended ranges. On another note, the 204 has been an inherently accurate caliber, especially with the lighter pills. The varmint grenade in the .20 cal will be 26 gr and should be able to spit them out at around 4500 fps. The BC will be lousy so it will run out of steam fairly quickly.
For stuff under 300 yds it should just be a matter of point, shoot, and watch skippy vaporize through the scope. As with any of the 20 cal bullets that have come out, I will be buying a box or two to re-load for testing. Not sure when they will be available for us out here in Alberta. I know P&D carries them for the .22 cals.

You know we are bored and things are getting trivial when we start discussing this topic LOL Can't say I've ever had the situation where a bullet hasn't performed and I had to track a trail of gopher blood for miles to recover the body If I've him him, he be dead.
Well, maybe if you are worried about damaging the hide or the meat... But the desire here seems to be more... well... "He blowed up REAL good!" (credit SCTV) LOL

hey guys,
ive loaded up some of those 36 gr grenades in my .223 and actually was impressed with their accuracy dispite the bad press.
i shot a group just under an inch this weekend, and then was misting gophers out to 250 yards with them.
so...smoke em if ya got em.

aside from the muzzle loader your best bet is to buy my 7 mag and ill even give you a less than 1/2 load for gophers/yotes, it shoots 4000 fps and sends the little buggers 10+ feet

Varmints & bullets
.22 Hornet (Ruger 77/22 Varmint) 35gr V-Max or .218 Bee bullet (100-200yds)
.223 (Mini 14 Target) Sierra 52gr BTHP match
.223 (CZ-527 Varmint) 40gr Nosler BT (100-300yds)
.22-250 (Savage LRPV) 55 Sierra Blitz Kings (out to 500yds)
Been trying the Barnes Varmint Grenades in .22-250 ( 39.5gr Varget @ 4300+ fps) still delivers (1/2" +/-) groups at 100yds ....but the Sierras group 5 into 1/4" and I KNOW they work out past 400yds consistently
Also tried 6mm Varmint Grenades in my 6BR...but have not found a noteworthy load as of yet
