I do it myself. Amazing how but better FB is when I block the crap. Have seen so many posts and lies being spread on it that I have been calling people out on it lots. My grandfather taught against these types of dirtbags overseas, I will do it on my home soil. My fathers family has been in Canada since before confederation, and my mothers family came from Pennsylvania in a Red River cart. I'm Canadian, not anything else. Except certifiably a little crazy.
No problem hunting Nazis on my home soil, and that tool is one great step. If you haven't seen the lies openly posted on Facebook, you probably think they are truths.

It is a slippery slope, and people need to learn to be more aware of sensationalist, fake websites. It amazes me how many people re-post websites with blatantly false articles, websites with male performance ads strewn all over. I don't mean to sound like an ageist, but it's usually, older, less internet-savvy folk.

It's scary to see censorship, but it's also scary to see people shoot up pizza parlours because they read that Hillary Clinton was operating a child trafficking ring in the basement.

That's the crux of it now isn't it? I hate racists but I also equally hate the current trend of the political left to play gender and identity politics in ways that create more division rather than unity. I have a sister who is so leftist that she thinks I'm a bigot because I dare question people if they do something dumb or immoral when they happen to have different skin pigmentation than my own lily-white butt.... and she even does this while I have two black people living in my own household! That's how stupid and utterly devoid of logic she has become, that scary part is that she spreads the idiocy and is doing so ceaselessly. What's more is that she is a 'professional' journalist as well as a rabid online bully. I also hate how certain political factions intentionally misrepresent or utterly fabricate anti firearms propaganda. I cannot trust an elected representative who throws their name behind falsified 'data' whether its the person who fabricated said propaganda or the twit voting the party line who didn't bother fact-checking the claim or who voted against the wishes of the majority of their constituents.

If any political party gets to censor things you can bet there will be bias. Just concentrate on the spread of hate, be it white supremacists or militant lefties such as Antifa. I've not seen anyone arrested on spreading false anti-pipeline propaganda.....

Seems like there are a lot of very gullible people that believe the most far fetched conspiracy theories. They get these from the reams of fake sites that spread crap to peddle click bait to the masses.

Then there are the troll farms that spread false lies and stories and accusations.

Sadly a significant portion of the population believes what they read without any filter.

Should the CBC censor stories in favor of Jody Wilson Raybould in favor or Trudeau? Absolutely not.

Should media delete references in Alberta to us now being individually over $13,000 in debt due to government spending or over $18,000 Federally? No.

If Facebook or media outlets start reporting on something as true and it is clearly false...totally. If mainstream media just posted contrails are a government conspiracy to cause migraines and benefit big pharmaceutical with no factual foundation...should they?

If media sources can make stuff up they can be a significant influence source to change political mindsets of the masses. Manipulation like that is very bad.

Extremism is rooted in social media. You look at all the data on where extremists got their roots is in in social media trash. YouTube, facebook and the like.

One thing I hate is how the media jumps on anything extremist and blows it up in international headlines. I find it frustrating as it gives unnecessary exposure and power to these groups. If you ignore them their funding dries up from around the world.

I'm guessing that most people who don't believe he there is a problem with extremist propaganda, are part of the problem or just not exposed to it. I have grown up in central Alberta, and all my life we have had a very vocal, open group of Nazi and white nationalist scum west of Innisfail/Penhold. Provost had the leader of Alberta's KKK, who I met in the 90's.
Now they call themselves the 3%, pretending to be protectors. All the while posting fake crap on FB. There is no way of reporting them or getting their lies off of it either.
I've seen posts of Christians having gas poured on them and lit, that actually was a group incinerated from stealing gas from an overturned tanker. Yup needs to be censored.
Another post of a Muslim Car Bomber Blows self up prematurely. Actually the young guy who blew up the cars in Sherwood Park. Yup, same opinion.
Muslims attack pork festival. Actually a gang shooting outside a pork BBQ after it closed. Yup same opinion.
How about the Quebec mayor refusing the demands of Muslims to remove pork from the school menus? More BS.

The shooter in Moncton, was fed by these lies. 4 dead. Mosque lit on fire, multiple groups shot in Mosques, people attacking others over fake news has gotten tiring, as has the people claiming there is no problem.

Now instead of naive people, substitute dangerous, racist, mentally ill, psychopaths, extremists, and now allow them to much easier communicate as a group (via the internet) and they think that gee, everybody is just like me.......... and you get the sad state of affairs of today, which is the abundance of the hate groups out there.

Yes censorship is not a good thing, but I do believe that more needs to be done to monitor the likes of of the whack jobs involved in the hate and extremist groups.

I just watched a great documentary on the Smithsonian Channel on the Hitler Youth the other day. It was pretty scary to see how well the state sponsored indoctrination worked. These young boys in the 30s were fed the same propaganda and by the late teens were full blown Nazi idealists....... the old men could still recite the songs now word for word.

You see and hear the same thing everyday you start believing it. You read and listen to the same content everyday on the internet as that's what you're interested in you start believing it as you never stop to listen to a dissenting voice.

Our social media feeds are a dangerous (well not dangerous but you know what I mean). As we only get feeds that FB/GOOGLE etc have found to be of interest to us. Never views that question our beliefs........
