I'm out of town working and my roommate sent me this picture a couple days ago of a note he found on our front door. Motor is (was) a mint condition 2004 Yamaha 25hp 2 stroke with maybe 100 hours on it.
I called the tree removal company and they said "it's just a little crack in the plastic cover, we'll pay to have it repaired". My roommate sent me some pictures today, actually it's a smashed $400 fiberglass cowling plus a $95 decal kit and that's if the motor itself isn't damaged.
The inside looks OK and is pretty well protected but I won't know until I get back in town.
I don't see how the motor would possibly be hurt, it didn't even break through the cowling.
You gotta give them props for leaving the note and contact info and being willing to pay to fix it. Lots of people would just pretend it never happened...
Get a written quote for a replacement cowling and send it to the company.
Atleast the company is owning up to it. I would be communicating through email so there's a paper trail if they get the bill and decide not to pay. That note looks like it was written by a 5 year old.

Haha I'll second that. Had to read over it a couple times to figure it out
Wow that sucks man. I'm sure the motor itself will be just fine and just needs a new lid. Shabby job by the tree removal service, pretty careless wrecking a mans boat like that. I'd be choked.
Your neighbour probably isn't going to like the cost of replacing that cowling. I cracked mine on a 2005 Yamaha 40 hp and it was $800 for the cowling and the sticker package......hopefully yours isn't that pricey.
