Default Low Carb Trail Snacks

I'll throw this out here. Some time a go (spring'ish) there was a thread here about the Keto diet. It sounded like something that might actually work for me. So I did some research ad decided i'd try it for a month. Well here I am, 6 months later and 45 odd pounds lighter still going. Now hunting season is upon me and my favorite time is be out on the trails walking cutline to cutline with a baggie of trail mix and granola bars. This year is going to be different. No trail mix, no granola bars .
Been experimenting with a few mixes of my own i'll share my favorite so far, but looking for what others have tried, or will be trying.
My favorite mix so far (test and sample sizes only, set your own ratios as you see fit):
1/2 cup roasted almonds
1/4 cup peanuts
1/4 cup broken (not crushed) pecans
2 tbsp. dark chocolate baking chips (read the labels here!)

Melt the chocolate in double boiler
mix up nuts
add melted chocolate and mix so a bit of chocolate gets on everything
spoon out on parchment paper and let cool
Break up any large chunks and enjoy.
The next batch will have some pumpkin seeds and maybe some sunflower seeds.

Will have to give that a try. If you run low on time and are looking for a decent bar from the store, I've found the Kirkland nut bars from Costco are decent carb-wise, and actually taste good. They actually sound very similar to your recipe above. We've tried a few of the other bars and have found them pretty nasty.

The Kirkland bars were my go to before the diet. There are some other bars online that's seem okay, but I don't see the appeal of buying food online. Just can't bring myself to potentially waste money on something I don't like, may be bad etc.

This sounds good, I would probably replace the peanuts with macadamia nuts though... Thank you for posting this recipe, I'm going to give it a try.

I'm with you, have thrown out several options ordered online that were just nasty. The Kirkland bars are 7 net carbs, so lower than most but still not something you want to be munching multiple bars down.

Your right, there are better 'keto' choices for nuts, but peanuts are cheap!
Coconut is another popular choice, but I don't think there's a sweet enough chocolate I can use to choke that down

I know what I like for a homemade low carb snack.

Jerky!

Beef or deer.

Which makes me think I should make some this weekend.....

Just out of curiosity, have you been doing full on Keto, or just low carb?

I couldn't bring myself to do full on, too much of a leap for me to actually be adding fats to foods other than the normal for cooking purposes. Have just gone low carb instead, cutting out the breads and pasta and sugars, etc... and have still dropped 46+ lbs in just over 5 months.

I love jerky, but have to research some low carb options. Most marinades online aren't carb friendly, sugar content I guess mostly. Do you have a good recipe?

I did full on keto for the first couple months, weighing everything. Then summer holidays came and the scale stayed home and hasn't really been used since. It's more low carb for me right now. I have almost reached my goal weight and will be transitioning off the diet towards the end of October. It has changed my eating habits, that will help me after I'm off. There is no way I can do this over Thanksgiving and Christmas! I don't care if you have the will power of a steel grizzly trap, you can't say no to baba's perogies!

Don’t mean to derail the thread, if nast or big rack can pm me that would be awesome.
Can you guys explain what your doing? Wife has been pushing for this keto diet, I looked into it and comes off as not sustainable in the long term. The last two winters I’ve weight lifted and rode a stationary at home and lost about 20lbs each season. Then spring and summer I’m out and active a lot and too tired to continue my evening exercise routine. Long story short Ive gained about 15 back by fall each time. I’m a fairly active heavier set guy. Ideal goal is to drop 40lbs

I find it very difficult to maintain a low carb and sugar intake when I’m hiking in the bush for days. Need the fuel to maintain energy and to keep warm. I eat like a horse when I’m in the bush so my apologies for continuing the derail.
Last fall went on keto diet and lost 30lbs in a few months but found it difficult to continue and have also gained back 15lbs in recent months. Have heard many good things about the Mediterranean diet.

It’s very sustainable if done right, paired with intermittent fasting, this diet did amazing things for me. You do need to make sure you’re eating enough fats though, that’s what will help you stay satiated until your next meal. Also should be getting about 6-10 cups of veggies per day for optimal nutrient intake. Send me a PM with any questions you may have, I lost 100 pounds on keto and intermittent fasting.

You could just use something like the Hi Mountain Jerky mixes, zero carbs and zero calories. Not my favorite jerky in the world but not bad either and would completely avoid the carb issue.

Default low carb snacks

Ive been doing the low carb borderline keto diet for two years, dropped 50 pounds and it has stayed off.

I bring out a lot of jerky, cooked bacon in a Ziploc and a lot of nuts. Also lots of hard boiled eggs, pre cooked and cut steak. Ive been dabbling with some home made pemmican bars and they are edible but hardly tasty.

There is something about eating deer jerky while hunting deer, my jerky recipe is salt.pepper.smoke. that is all.

For those that think adding fats is what its all about red up on the Keto gains facebook group and webpage. They have it dialed in the right way. Pouring bacon grease on salad and things like that is insane. They follow high protein, medium to low fat and very low carb. They use fats to help feel full. If your goal is to drop weight, check them out.

I personally know many people (including myself) who have followed this and dropped a pile of weight and enjoyed it as there is substitutes for almost anything out there. Heck the wife makes a deadly avacado brownie and you can barely notice a difference compared to real ones.

I have been cutting down on carbs a lot but not to the degree of keto and it helped me drop about 12 pounds over the last few months. Lately though I have started intermittent fasting where you basically just consume all your daily calories between an eight hour period, for me being noon until 8:00pm and no eating or drinking anything other than black coffee, tea or water outside of that and even though I am still eating exactly the same amount as before, the pounds are dropping off way faster! Over the last week alone I dropped another 7 pounds just changing the times I consume the calories. I am quite pleased actually and find it so much easier to manage.

I am a big dude and for the first time in longer than I can remember I am under 300lbs! Only another 80 or so to go... lol

I like to tell myself i was on keto diet before it was hip. Also did the caveman few years back, didn't follow through... Can't put my finger why. The keto is awesome.
A couple of notes...
1. Be careful with nuts. Yes, they are kinda blessing as far as nutrition goes, but here is the problem... The are so easy to get carried away with. They are so munchable. So, if you but a bag of Costco nuts and have it in your truck it's easy to exceed your daily calorie intake just on that...
And peanuts are closer to the bottom of keto-usefullness. Goigle it.
2. Eating fat doesn't mean eating animal fat. Avocadoes, olive oil and olives in general, nuts, cheese... A bowl of green leafy salad with sliced avocado, olives, nuts, crumbled cheese, and crumbled bacon is so much better than just a piece of meat.
3. Incorporate intermediate fasting.
4. Don't look at keto as "loosing weight" diet. First, it's not really a diet, and, second, it is so much more..

I'm gonna dig up a few YouTube channels that are quite useful for keto-curious.

Fire roasted squirrel is your best bet, lean and low carbs and easily available with the click of a firing pin 👍😉
Just use some of the keto for bait to bring them in 🐿

Personally, I enjoy baked goods, so I would include some almond butter or peanut butter "shortbread cookies" made with almond flour. I like to add in extra seeds and nuts for more texture and nutrition.

For trail snacks, I suggest doing a search for "shelf stable keto snacks" and see what you might like.

For those interested in finding out more about keto, a site that I find to be quite balanced with some good basic information is: https://www.dietdoctor.com/

I have discussed keto on here quite a bit almost to the point of being preachy. The lifestyle works and cannot be disputed. There is no such thing as an essential carb because carbs are not essential. The bottom line is that the vast majority of people that do eat carbs, do not earn their carbs to begin with. Food is fuel and not recreation or a social event. Our society focuses on food being recreation and a social event though and not for and end means or purpose. Why any man would want to look like a pregnant woman is beyond me. Keto works and is sustainable. Guess that’s a bit of derail. I apologize...

I’ve been in keto for a while, pepperoni is actually almost the perfect keto snack lol. High fat, no carb, some protein. Just don’t eat too much of it or you will over protein and pop out
