Default Anyone build a DIY Electric Fence for garden pests ???

We have a number of hoodlum's that have been destroying our shrubs, flowers & small garden. Did a Google/YTube search and found a few suggestions for a small electric fence to deter critters & garden pests. From one link I found an energizer that operates on "D" batteries on E-Bay that may work.

Has anyone here built a DIY garden variety electric fence ?

Tks in advance for any info.

David

Just did a quick search, a few guys here posted some feedback about small backpacking e-fences.

Will drop by UFA, tks for the suggestion.

If you need to fence for the winter to protect the yard have tall enough posts to accommodate another wire in case the snow gets deep and deer can walk over the fence.
Next year plant some perimeter plants that deer hate and won't walk through. Deer hate walking through several plants because the pollens stick to their legs and affects their ability to smell predators. The are lots listed online.

Tks R/B for the info, I'm more concerned about the garden & flower beds during the summer/fall.

Read a few posts on here about bear fences the Gallagher B10 portable looks like a decent unit, will investigate further.

Yep head to Peavy Mart before UFA (better prices) grab a little fencer and a handful of them push in posts and good to go, they suck for corners though so might have pound in a t-post and pick up a handful of insulators.

I've run a few here from these little ones to the 1500-1800's (the big ones hurt!) we set up a little one to keep a couple pigs IN the garden, so should keep deer out, lol.

Seen a video of a fella that fenced a food plot off to keep em out till it got going, said deer don't have much depth perception, had one wire at 2ft and 6ft in one wire at 3-4ft and kept em out.
Our deer here can jump a 5.1/2ft Paige wire fence from a standstill.

Also check the Co-op if there's one near you. I found the best prices and selection there (Stony Plain), after going to Peavy Mart and UFA (where I found best price for t-posts). Found a good website (http://www.electric-deer-fence.com/d...t-line-p-2.htm) dedicated to e-fences for deer and took most advice there. Also saw the food plot video. There are lots of videos and ideas.

We set up a two-wire fence around our garden and it worked. We saw deer being shocked and avoiding the fence. One thing to remember is that you shouldn't place the wire too high because if the deer decides to jump the fence (they eventually will) and brushes the wire on the way over, it won't get shocked because its feet aren't touching the ground. We are following the advice on the website above and waiting for the deer to figure out they can jump over and then place second fence with one wire 3 feet in front of the first. The idea being the deer can't figure out how to jump both fences at the same time. We'll see.

We've tried it all over the years. Planting so-called repellent plants, lights, flashy tape, but the deer eventually figure out how to get around them. This is the first year in a long time that we had no problems from "hoodlums."

Tks D/M for the informative post, I'm planning on going to Red Deer tomorrow to see what's available for a Zip'n HD voltage critter fence, perhaps we'll also get rid of a few black/white feral cats, too.

Cheers

D.
