Fly Line Memory
Hello All,
Had the fly rod out for the first time yesterday. I noticed that may fly line was showing a lot of memory from being on the spool all winter. Is there any way to avoid this or fix this?
Cheers

Cast it....catch some fish.....cast it some more....catch some more fish.
Give that line new memories of catching fish and it will behave for you

Stretch it!
Beerhonky, (haha)
Strip however much line you want to cast off your reel and as you do so give it a good tight stretch between your hands. Do an arms length at a time. Should get rid of most of the memory. Works for coily leaders too.
Cheers!

You can straighten it about 8 feet at a time by holding a section of it in front of you and using your foot to slowly apply pressure downwards. Hold a section, slowly stretch it out with your foot, lather, rinse, repeat.
I've attached what could possibly be the worst MSPaint picture in the world to help you understand.

I usually (when I remember) start each day's fishing by throwing the line around a fence post or tree, walking out as far as I can cast and giving it a long slow stretch, then I wind it back up, and switch lines if I am likely to fish more than one, and repeat.

Haha. Great visual MTB. That is pretty much the idea behind my strategy. Yours seems doubly efficient with addition of a third appendage.
Cheers

winter storage
My brother spools his fly line around a 5 gallon pail over the winter, works for him. The other suggestions between/before trips are great b.t.w. Love that stick man sketch. That's funny right there...

That's awesome! It's not often I laugh out loud in my office. If only my 3rd appendage was big enough to use this method. (yes, I realize it's a foot, but damn funny anyway)
