Default Firearm registration question

Have a question to something I have come across.
I recently picked up a shotgun that has previously been registered. The only point is that the last few hands it has been through did not register it, and I do not have the last registration certificate. Has anyone run into this before? Can I contact CFC and do a new registration in my name, or do I need to somehow track the last registered owner down and transfer it from him? Would like to find out what is required BEFORE I call CFC. Thanks

Proving that you acquired the gun legally might be a bit of a chore without the registered owner signing over the registration to you.Being that the previous registered owner sold the gun without doing a legal transfer,he might not be all that willing to admit that he even sold the gun to the person that you bought it from.I would not buy a firearm that has been previously registered, without contacting the last registered owner first.
