Not a chance, IMO. Politics is about pleasing the majority. In this case, the optics of a newly-elected party reopening the grizzly hunt would badly damage their base of support.

It does sting when politics trumps sound wildlife policy.

Where does Todd Loewen fit in with the UCP? He was the enivironmt minister to be with Brian Jean’s WR.

Todd seems to be a sensible guy BUT was an outfitter I believe so when Ryk Vischer starts taking him golfing once a week things may change in favour of team APOS

What’s good for APOS is good for the Alberta resident and likewise. Each party wants stable and well manged populations.

A conservative government took the hunt away based on their biologists recommendations. A new government won't reverse that decision until the bio's tell them different.

That’s a good point. I completely forgot about that.

There might be a hunt for them one day but most likely not anytime soon no matter how much whining goes on about it

I think the population could sustain 1 bear per management area
They could do a raffle like the ministers tags
$10/ ticket but no cap on the amount of tickets available
All proceeds going back towards reducing conflict bear losses

Bears might not be getting hunted right now but they are still shot and put down by fish and wildlife

In my opinion they would be better off to rock the boat at the beginning of their term. That way they have 4 years to prove that it’s sustainable, or 4 years to hope the tree huggers forget

I think something tragic will have to happen first before they open up another griz hunt. A little kid camping gets attacked or something like that. NOT an elk hunter out with his bow or a rancher out checking his cows. In either of those scenarios, i would imagine the general public would just think “huh. Well, that figures...”
But you have a 10 year old kid attacked while camping or hiking or something, and it’s totally different in the public’s eye.

Just my humble opinion. I hope I’m wrong.

This is the only thing that may sway public opinion. Some poor non hunter has to be mauled or worse. Sad.

Then all you'll hear is " well, it's the bears home first. Don't go there if you don't want to get chewed."

There wasn't a bunch of public sympathy for the geocacher that got attacked last summer or the trout fishermen down near the Castle a couple of years ago. If it's a hunter they just stand and applaud the bear.

As nice as it would be, I think there are bigger fish to fry in the next four years.

If the tragic mauling/deaths (Einarson Lake Yukon) of Adele Roesholt and her 10 month old infant late 2018 fail to create impetus for management policy changes, then I don't know what will.

Unfortunately it would have to directly affect the lives of some person of high influence-a politician or celebrity.

Was there not a planned grizzly study for 2020? I remember reading or being told as such from someone in the field. Nothing is going to change until a update to date accurate study is done province wide.

Agreed, an updated population count on Alberta Grizzlies is long overdue!!

Agreed, but I don't see JK approving this expenditure at this time. The province is broke and there are other things that need fixing. You will also see him pause the Bighorn Project and other projects in health and education.

Yup lol and don’t come back. Finally a guy that has outdoor experience, has actually hunted, fished and enjoys the outdoors in this great province. But because of some ties to the outfitting industry he wouldn’t be an ideal minister. The stupidity of some people truly amazes me.

I think Jason Nixon would be the wiser choice as an environment minister.

I would bet that all that info is long gone
Hasn’t been a grizzly hunt in a long time and there has been at least 2 different company’s that have been operating the draws since it shut down
I know when I look at my priority history there isn’t any grizzly on it

I agree. I was at the top of the priority list when they killed it

Basically buying the draw application turned into a non existent outcome

Kinda exactly like how fraud works..........
