Propane Question
The local gas station charges 18 dollars to refill a 20lb tank. It doesnt matter if the tank was half full already they wont split the difference. I asked about autofill if the would charge by the liter and the kid said its too dangerous and they wont do it that way. It just doesnt seem right to me that they can gouge us like that.
How many liters in a 20lb tank?
Does anyone know where they fill by the liter around North Edmonton?

Try the Co-Op or UFA. Around Red Deer and Rocky they fill by the Litre.

don't know about Edmonton, but around here the coop and petro can both charge by the pound. costco charges me for the whole tank regardless, but they also charge half of what the other stations charge, so as long as the tank is at least half empty, i am always ahead.

For $22 I just do the exchange thing...I have two tanks so when one dies I just swap it out with the other and exchange the empty one. And lots of places carry the exchange tanks, so even if I'm in a pinch heading out early in the morning and need propane I can always hit up the Petro Can and grab a full tank on my way.
Not enough places refill tanks around here, which is the main reason I didn't go that route.

Yeah thats what ive been doing they have a propane exchange in town 24hours at the Macs. But they seem to be a little less full than they should be. However it is convenient. Wish they had a Strickland propane and propane accesories place around here!

Back in the day, had propane for our gas service. Getting a propane tank filled on the farm was a lot cheaper by the litre than filling a 20 lb propane bottle per litre because you did not pay all the road taxes etc. I cannot understand why one has to pay all these road taxes on propane for a barbeque? Or has it changed?

$20 at Fast Gas in Ft Sask now too.
Was $16, then $18 last year.
I have the one lb green bottle adapter too to fill them off a 20, handy to have.

I'm pretty sure the Husky station on St.Albert trail in St.Albert still charges by the pound, it's been awhile since I've had to refill one

Actually, in it's pure form at 25 C, its density is 0.493. When I used to haul it in bulk, we always assumed its density to be 0.505, because it was usually somewhat cooler than 25C.
One litre of liquid propane at a nominal density of 0.500 would be 0.5 kg, or about 1.1 lb.

if I'm not mistaken they only fill to 80% of rated capacity, so a empty 20lb tank would only get filled with 16lbs of propane. correct me if i'm wrong

Something you should consider doing is draining your tanks completely before refilling.. Just tip upside down and open up allowing any moisture to escape before refilling...
20 pretty standard in the South these days.

Bulk propane / NGL tankers were max. 90% fill by volume, less than that if GCVW was reached first. Non-pressurized fuels, ie gasoline, diesel, heating oil, jet fuel, av gas etc, are max. 95% fill by volume.
Don't know about fill volumes on smaller, ie 20, 30 , 40 lb tanks.

One time me and a buddy where going on a 2 week trek into the sask. wilderness ice fishing. We had 5 20-lb bottles, and 3- 30? lb bottles. All where half full, 3/4 full etc. but we needed them right full. So we go to the only place around here that fills them, and they said it was 20/30$ wether full or empty. I wasnt impressed since we maybe needed 70lbs not 160. so i told the attendant to empty the bottles because i wanted 160$ of their propane. I walk in to pay, and sure as **** the guy is out there emptying these bottles off in the parking lot. stupidest thing i have ever seen, just a cloud of propane.

Good question, I don't know if they are sized to hold 20 lb of propane when 90% full, or if a 20 lb tank when 90% full only has 18 lb of propane. ?

It would seem to me that any place that charges a full 20 lb rate to fill a partial 20 lb tank is too lazy or ill-equiped to charge for a partial fill, or just wants to gouge the customer.
It's simple; weigh tha tank before and after the fill, and charge the customer for that difference.

Propane refills
Most places that refill propane tanks charge a fixed anount to pay for the product as well as the time and other costs associsted with propane reselling i.e classes to learn how to do it safely this training is done at least every five years ata cost of about $100 plus the 8 hours to pay employees their wage for that time It is also less dangerous to always fill to the weight of an empty tank plus 20 lbs the empty weight is always stamped into the tank qnd is marked as TW (tare weight) That is what you are paying for the costs involved with dispensing propane.

I have a bunch of see through cylinders from lite cylinder. Never have to wonder how much gas u got left again. I tried being a distributor for them. Never worked out great tho.More often than not they arernt filled to capacity and this takes the guess work out. Still got 30 or 40 of em if anyone is interested. I would sell em at my cost to get em out of my shed. Pretty cool units. Check em out @ www.litecylinder.com.
