While watching the news about Ft mac, the emergency alert broadcast came on saying that wood buffalo area is being evacuated.

Main thing everyone is focusing on is evacuating safely. Everyone is being told to head north. They plan on using site camps for people evacuating.
There is an app to upload on the GOA website that is giving updates continually. Seems it is getting worse by the minute. Good luck everyone out there.
Maybe should have asked for the help from extra firefighters a couple days ago!!!!!!!!

This isn't good at all. Hope everyone is safe. Looks like it's going to be a big disaster but hopefully not. Heard the gas station blew up and burger King is gone at the top of the hill. Stay safe everyone and get out.

Just heard the update. What happened, did the winds shift unexpectedly? It sounds to me that things escalated rather quickly this afternoon. I hope that they can get a handle on things quickly. Stay safe you folks up that way.

I agree, but the present provincial government pulled out lots of the aerial firefighting budget

I'm of the opinion that every possible resource should be thrown at the region.

Afternoon winds and high temps a bad combination....that close to town could be a nightmare. The entire region is in our prayers!

Cat, have the job sites been evacuated now? I would think those closer to town would be in a pretty dangerous spot. Thinking of you all up there. I haven't been up there since 2007 but it's scary to think about this.

In my 35 years living in the city, fires were close several times, but it never got this serious. Be careful everyone, don't take any unnecessary risks.

Not sure about others, but my site is not evacuating as of right now. We're down the Suncor AOSTRA road

Yes, but no new workers are going in except the absolute minimum. At least that's what I'm hearing from guys I know there.

Wife just called their camp has been put on food and water rations - no one can say if, how or when they will see groceries.

Likely gonna start calling for flights to send workers south and dial back to skeleton crews.

Elementary because they mobilized the main fire crews to Thd city
So they have to make sure they keep the site working at s minimum
Much of it is in shutdown turnaround anyway

Construction sites can be evacuated easily, the problem is the running refineries. You can't just turn off a switch and come back in a week and push the switch to start up again. If a plant is threatened by fire, the management will want to bring down the units in a safe , controlled manner, or things can happen that would be much more of a threat than a forest fire.
They can bring them down safely

Where can all those people go, evacuating to the north ? Not much there for them.

Yep. Even with the turnarounds and the plants being shut down or partially shut down, it still poses dangers.

Watching the news now and it still puts me in awe

Josslyn. Apparently a lot of the food and supplies are being redirected because camps where evacuees are being sent have limited or no supplies.
