Close call
Well I decided to head out to Wabamun for a couple hours of fishing after supper.Hooked up the boat and away I go. Got to the lake and got in line to launch.Got the boat all unhooked, rod in ,all ready just have to back in unhook the boat winch and I'm golden. While waiting I thought hmm I'll just put my licence in the tackle bag so I can leave the wallet in the truck. Pulled my licence to discover it is last years, arrrg must have put he wrong one in my wallet when I printed it in spring.Out I get tie the boat back down and head out to the nearest store for a reprint. That's when I discover I never bought my licence in the spring . Did the new win card and must have forgot the licence. So I bought it and thought I'll just head over to Jackfish lake and save some time. Get there ...Twenty bucks to access the lake sir . It's almost 8pm by now I said not paying 20 for access to a public lake ,screw that . Went home and will try another time I guess.
The crazy thing is I have been out fishing more than usual this year and never had the licence and obviously never got stopped (lucky me)

I've never been checked for a fishing license, but I have been checked 4 times in the last two years for my hunting licenses, which is fine by me, I like seeing them out there.

In thirty or so years I have only been checked about 2 times in the summer months that I can remember. Checked too many times to count when on the hard water. Long lake by Boyle is the probably the place that I have seen F&W the most. 70% of the time.

You must never fish at wab much, I seem to have a large target on my back saying this guy looks suspicious. Maybe it's my hat on backwards lol or the choice in tunes. I have been stopped so many times I can't recall but I like it, I have seen them escort people from the lake.
Been stopped fishing from shore, ice and boat on jackfish, wab, on the road , carson, slave
They bail right into the boat and check it all out.
Almost everywhere. Funny thing is we don't eat fish so I have never kept one in my years of fishing.
I met one officer so many times last year we knew each other's names.
Maybe it's just the amount we fish or my luck, but I have been asked for boat reg, boaters license and fishing licence.
What they said is they are not out as much on weekends as there funding is low don't get much overtime. Might be something there as I find I get checked more frequently on weekdays.
The jackfish 20 dollar thing sucks as well to get ran over by a ski boat

It has been rare that I am checked for a fishing licence - I would like to see more enforcement out there.
On my home lake, however, the officers recognize my boat and just cruise up and wave to me .... I guess they have checked me over the years enough times to know I have all my stuff in order.
There are not enough of those guys out there to help us protect our resource IMO.

In 10 years was stopped,
- 1 time at Battle Lake, 2 officers came racing across the lake, pull up and first question was "do you know there is a speed limit on this lake". Confused me because I was using my 8hp kicker which is connected to my 140hp via a steering rod. I told him I would be lucky to break the speed limit with a kicker on a 16ft Crestliner. Oh, says the officer thought you were using your big motor(apparently they were watching us with Bino's from across the lake), anyway have a great day and good luck. They did not check for permits, boat licence, nadda.
- 1 time on Pigeon Lake, officer came up on a Seadoo in full dress, check our permits, and barbs. I could not find my fishing licence and apologized. I told him I will get off the lake immediately. He replied make sure you get a new licence on your way home and keep it on you at all times when fishing, enjoy the rest of your day on the lake.

I see on the hill they have a lookout spot, its probably you fish so far out into the boonies they can't see you, or think who's this retard fishing in the middle of the lake in 40 feet.
I don't know if its fish and wildlife or the conservation officers that have the facility at that end of the lake. But I have even been surveyed, how many fish condition, depth what kind of hook. Species I was seeing and what not.
But then again when you fish almost every day your bound to see some.

I can vouch this statement.
Last year I worked weekends, went fishing during the week on my days off to Wabamun, ran into them quite frequently during the week. Been checked for licenses, life jackets, safety rope, whistles, oars, even had one officer go through my truck because he smelt a strong presence of fish...
Now that I work Monday to Friday most of my fishing time is spent on the weekends, I have only been checked once this year, it was on a Friday at Pigeon when me and a buddy filled two tags of ours. The officer was extremely friendly, polite and very respectful. Usually most of them just assume and jump the gun because I'm young.
But on the same side of the coin, they're out doing their jobs and protecting the sport and past time that we all love as fishermen!
Too bad the government doesn't give two sticks about it and fund it a tad bit more than it is...

It was from the 4 leftover containers of minnows I had in my truck from the fishing haha.
But yeah. Most people complain about COs being arseholes, but in reality if you have nothing to hide, know the rules and are respectful you will be treated good back. Same thing goes with police.

I have been checked several times in my life by Wildlife officers and never had a bad experience whether fishing or hunting. It is just that this was an unusual story I thought I would relate to the forum. I am a stickler for following the rules and this was a pure oversight on my part. I fully expect I would have been paying for my sin of not paying attention had I been checked.
