Default Renting a pickup for hunting

I'm planning to rent a pickup truck for a bear hunt, next month.
As it costs a lot to do so,I was thinking to rent one from an
individual vs. a car rental company.

I was talking to 'Intact' last year. They said a person borrowing
or renting an individual's truck is not responsible for accidents,
damages, etc. The owner is responsible for everything.

I never had an accident in the past, but just in case I happen
to have an accident driving a rental truck,I wanna know if and
how I'll be responsible for possible accidents/damages to an
individual's truck.

Thanks for your suggestions/input.

Default dont doubt the owner is responsible for everything

so if you had an accident and refused to pay for damages he would have to sue you to cover repairs.
Only my opinion but I think you got bad info from Intact for if there was a claim on a personal vehicle and they found out the individual had rented it to someone I think they would deny the claim as the owner had engaged in commercial activity by renting it.

You don't need a truck to hunt bears. I hunted for years with a car and van. Just need some creativity and a tarp

borrowing/renting someones truck: bad idea
renting a truck from a rental company for hunting (presumably offroad or at least off public roads): bad idea (read the fine print in the contract).

Not sure what you drive currently, but maybe consider getting a utility trailer.

If your current vehicle isnt suitable to hunt bears, Im pretty sure a guy or two would be willing to take you out and join on there hunt. Make some new friends ect.

After I wrecked my truck quite a few years ago, I hunted out of a sunfire for 2 seasons....... Come home with a buck and a doe tied to the trunk lid, the wife quickly changed her views and I bought a cheap pathfinder lol.

Needless to say IMO there are better options then "renting" a truck for hunting.

You did it you're responsible. It's that simple. I don't understand how you are even asking this.

If you screw something up just man up and pay for it. Every nickels worth.

If you borrow a vehicle you are in fact also borrowing their insurance too.

Yup.

Last fall my buddy and I were hunting with his truck, and he ended up having an issue with his front diff. We had to get it towed back to town, and dropped it off at the dealer. We then rented a truck from the dealer and continued hunting. He kept it a week, but we could easily have just dropped it off and taken the greyhound back to our home and saved some money on the rental, as he kept it for a week, and cost nearly $1000 with mileage and days of rental.

Remember watching the Deer Hunter? They hunted with a car.

I used to have a van that I had no problem hunting with, but I suppose it depends on the type of hunting and places you plan to hunt.

I now have a truck, and find it much more practical and less limiting. All I am limited by now is my nerve and length of winch cable.

Not sure he was being mean, just talking about responsibility.

From your initial post, it comes off as you were trying to minimize your liability if you had damaged the vehicle, and it sounded like you were leaning to renting a private vehicle because you would not be responsible for any damages. Not sure if you meant to come across like that, but that was the impression I got.

Reminds me of the 2 guys last fall i found on the road on foot. Seems they had sunk there brand new ecoboost rental truck in the swamp. Very unfamiliar with muskeg I guess. Helped them get it out. Still wonder if they ever got a moose.......

I used a budget truck last year while my truck was getting fixed up. Think it was something like 30 dollars a day. Just don't be stupid with it and you should be fine. (Ex: Don't go off road with it unless your just recovering a bear and you've already walked where your planning to go to make sure theres no hidden boulders, soft spots, anything that could cause damage basically.) For me where I hunt in Slave Lake theres ton of Oil Field roads so I just stuck to those.

Take the $1000 you'd spend on a rental and buy a beater truck.
Lots on Kijiji.

But if you find someone gullible enough to loan you their truck and you damage it with out you being responsible, let me know I got a good deal on a bridge for them.

And a little utility trailer. Go to Pick and Pull and find a bolt on trailer hitch that fits you car.

Hunters think they need a 4 wheel drive but I did more hunting with a 3 speed56 chev 1/2 ton than I did later when I wore out 3 pickups that were 4 wheel drive.

No,I didn't know renting an individual's truck is illegal. And I thought an insurance company knows the law.

I don't know if it is illegal to rent someone's vehicle. I never posted anything that could imply that was what I was getting at. I was pointing out that it came down to liability, and it just sounded like you were trying to minimize your liability.

As for the insurance company suggesting you rent a private person's vehicle as you would not be liable for damages, I would be speculating on what they were saying. But given your assumption that I said it was illegal, perhaps you had misunderstanding with the insurance company.

You may need thicker skin.

If you do damage you are responsible. Period. It has nothing to do with insurance companies or the like. It has to do with morals.

That is what I was saying. There really isn't anything mean at all to it.

Just rent one from budget and get the walk-away insurance. You'll be fine.

Or rent a truck and have your insurance company put a rental rider on your coverage. Mine is $50 yr for all rental vehicles. The down side is my insurance is affected if I get in an accident with the rental. Not so if you insure through a rental company. That is why their rates are so high.

If you have full coverage on your current vehicle usually you'll have coverage for a rental don't even have to add it. 50 bucks is nothing if you just have plpd. And I agree just rent a truck from budget, it's like 30 bucks a day.

I'll rent you my truck, but I won't be responsible for its safety.
The front end Needs new tie rods and ball joints. It wobbles all over the place. But once you get in tune with how it handles it's fine.
It burns coolant, so it may leave you stranded at the side of the road.
The transmission and transfercase and diffs are solid though.

I won't be responsible for your safety while in it.

See how turn around is fair play?
If you don't want to be responsible for damages to a vehicle, don't expect to be covered if you get injured.
Just go buy one on kijiji. Problem solved.

And yes, people use cars and vans to hunt big game.
Why not?
Those old 74' meteors have Huge trunks. You could easily stuff a whitetail in there. I remember grandma lifting up a big buck and throwing it in the trunk a Long time ago.

Hal. Me first hunting trip when I moved to B.C. was out of my 1952 Ford car

I bought that car from the original owner. He had a diary on it with service info, but also with 'family' stuff. Like junior's driving esson and first date etc.

I went with two buddies. we had a tarp for shelter. I shot my first mule deer that weekend. a Buck that scored 170 IIRC.

Went on a moose hunt in Ontario in my buddy's 1963 chev impala when it was a year old.

I also went on a hunt in Ontario with my Corvair Monza.C/W roof rack and Sportspal canoe.

The way the bush has opened up with so many oil and gas roads, I wouldn't be panicking if I didn't have the jeep or truck anymore and only had a car to hunt with. Very doable.....

Default Go for it

I rented one from Enterprise about 9 years ago for a hunt down south as my truck at the time was in rough shape. Worked great, had a new Chev for about $350.00 for the week all in. They didn't even want me to wash out the blood from a few critters when I took it back. It takes all the worry out over taking an older ride if your concerned about a break down too.

A bonus was it was also a great way to check out a truck I was considering buying. I liked it so much I bought one.
