One of very few wildlife issues where I agree with the more-equals...these farms should be shut down.

The farms won't be shut down due to the government lobbying the farms did to be able to operate. They operate right in front of the salmon streams if you can imagine. Use google earth and zoom in to the stream entries around Tofino. It is sad. The fish farms have a bloom of sea lice and it kills the salmon smolts as they come out of the stream. Some dead salmon smolts have 15 sea lice stuck to them. Don't get me started.

I for the life of me can not understand why we farm Atlantic salmon on the Pacific coast. Obviously fish are not meant to escape but do. Is this not just creating an invasive species problem? Can anyone explain the logic to me?

What's funny is the government released Atlantic salmon a number of years ago on the west coast to see how they would integrate within the eco system.

I use to get them all the time from my brother after they did their samples. We use to smoke them, so delicious smoked.

Never made any sense to me either. If they have to have salmon farms on the west coast couldn't they not at least use west coast salmon? Are they not able to be farmed for some reason?

They do farm pacific salmon as well

They raise them in hatcherys and let them go as smolts. The rate of return on farming pacific salmon to maturity is very low.

I was in the aquaculture industry for 10+years I can tell you for a fact there is operations farming coho, sockeye and chinook. Yes there is more Atlantic salmon farmed then pacific

I believe all farmed Salmon are Triploids (3N) and cannot spawn (sterile).

As a result these fish do nothing but eat and grow and eat and grow. Not a natural fish at all. At 12 months of age they can be 500% (5 times) the weight of a natural fish. People buy fish by the pound, so seems like a perfect way to grow them large, quickly and get them to market.

The issue is with parasites and disease spread to native fish/salmon.
