Default Youth Upland Bird Hunting

I'm a little unclear on what license requirements a youth hunter requires to hunt upland birds.

It says "A youth must be at least 12 years old (10 years of age for game bird) to hunt under the authority of any hunting licence in Alberta."

Does that mean that as long as he has his WIN and a wildlife certificate he is able to bird hunt? Or does he have to have passed the Hunter Ed course as well.

It means that a ten year old can legally hold the licenses required to hunt game birds. And of course they must meet the first time hunter requirements required to hold those licenses.

See, this is the peice that is also unclear to me.
Do they need to have completed hunters ed for migratory and upland?
It's clearly yes for big game, but vague for birds.

As an adult, I was required to complete the hunters ed, course to get upland/migratory licenses, so I suspect it would be the same for a youth.

Could be wrong, this was quite a while ago. Believe hunter ed. is offered online now.

The hunters education course is a requirement to get a WIN card and upland license on AlbertaRELM online. You have to answer a number of questions including requirement of hunter ed course or you cannot get the license.

The requirement is for " first time hunters", not first time big game hunters". Everyone needs to meet that requirement in order to qualify for a WIN card that allows the purchase of hunting licenses.

You can have a WIN card without hunter ed, but cannot buy a license without it. So you need to take the course to hunt upland birds.

Yes you can have a WIN card without meeting the first time hunter requirements, but that WIN card doesn't allow you to purchase hunting licenses, until you meet the first time hunter requirement. Having the course with your WIN card, is like having an endorsment on your operators license.
