Default sturgeon report from this past weekend.

Went out fishing every day since Thursday. Caught my 3rd and 4th sturgeon of the year. Both young! I have seen more sturgeon under the 2' mark this year then big guys. Here are some quick pics I snapped before I hastily returned them to the water.

I don't believe so. Wayne's pics of the small sturgeon have the same spots. I think its camouflage that goes away as the fish grows. But that's just speculation on my part. Maybe someone else will chime in with some facts.

I asked the biologist about the spots after a thread on here blaming ammonia in the water, he said its natural, some have spots some dont. Havent caught any bigger ones with them so maybe they just fade away, or I just havent caught the right ones. I will keep trying

there was a report on the river last year saying it hadn't been as clean in over 100 years, and is at its cleanest ever recorded , so I doubt it has anything to do with that, look at this sturgeon, it has like multi colors ( in the pic below ) . I am starting to think that there must be several types of breads of sturgeon in this system, I have seen so many now, and a lot of them look different from the last , Here is an example

and here iare a few that look different in the same size range

Color variation in fish can be a result of water quality, diet, natural variation, time of year, water temp, gender etc.
All of them should be the exact same species.

It happens with most fish that you get some that look a lil different. Its most easily seen in brook trout and bull trout IMO but almost all species i've encountered have a great deal of variation. With some exception, all lake sturgeon are genetically the same.

Could be a genetic variation. All fish probably have the gene, only some show it. Just like blonde/red/brunette hair, blue/green/brown eyes in humans. Maybe the spotted sturgeon are the gingers of this fish world... Of course, this is just my theory, I'm certainly not a biologist or genetecist. Just a fisherman...
