Barrel life 6.5 PRC

I have a 6.5 PRC on order, just wondering what those of you shooting this chambering for some time already are seeing for barrel life? Of course there are many things that affect said barrel life but a lot of numbers being claimed online...

This will be a hunting rig primarily, but I hope to be proficient to 500 with it so will entail a bunch of field shooting as well.

What is your definition of barrel life, what kind of accuracy does it need to hold?

I installed a 6.5 PRC Savage barrel on a different Savage action a couple of years ago.
It now has over 1,000 plus hard rounds through it, the owner rapid fires to the point you cannot touch the barrel.
Bore scope shows an incredible ammount of fire cracking .
This rifle will still shoot 3/4 MOA or better for 20 rounds.

The rifle is a Springfield Waypoint 2020 with stainless barrel, has a factory guarantee of .75 MOA so if it does shoot that or better (I imagine it will) how long should I expect it to hold that accuracy?

Thanks Cat - I won't be abusing it like that so hopefully it will hold initial accuracy beyond 1000 easily!

I will depend on how stout your loads are, how fast you shoot, and how many rounds you fire.

If it's a typical hunting rifle....say a dozen rounds fired a season (including yearly sight-ins)...it will probably out live you before you need to change out the barrel.

But that's a great caliber!! If it were me....I'd do load development and then long range target shooting (not hunting). Then it would probably last me at least three seasons of shooting before I would have a shot out barrel...

Couple reasons, one being cost. Not that its a cheap rig anyway but an additional $700 for the carbon barrel with no tangible benefit other than saving about 8oz didn't seem worth it. Second, I'm not too keen on BSF but obviously Springfield felt confident in their choice.

If and when the time comes to rebarrel I'd look at the carbon options, but that's a long way off at this point.

If you run 143’s and don’t push them harder than about 2950 you should be good for a long time.

Do you expect to see this in 2022 some time?

Ive had a carbon one on order for about a year already and they still have no ETA on the PRC models what ive been told.

I already bought a christensen ridgeline cause I got tired of waiting. The waypoint is a mythical creature to me now lol
