Gerard’s need conditions that are not found in most bodies of water to achieve the size fishermen associate with the strain. The issues with Kokanee populations in recent years have even affected there size in waters they historically reached large sizes
Those three strains and Kamloops strain are most common but BCs choice in strains is partly do to regulations regarding importing eyed eggs and fry from outside of the province more than anything. There choice in strains beyond that are more do to ph, forage, location and “hey we have some of these available”. I would not say theses strains have a better growth rate but more so they are better suited for stocking in a large variety of waters
Trout lodge has better strains then what are commonly stocked in B.C.. Sat through many many meetings regarding bringing in strains from outside of B.C. through regulatory changes or creation of a quarantine facility the the industry could use among all farms to bring in new strains. It was years of non stop education about rainbow trout strains pro’s/cons and availability
Too many years of dealing with trout bombarded my brain with knowledge I can’t get rid of even though I don’t fish trout often anymore or work with them.
