NAFA is moving towards only buying cerified wild fur by the year 2020. It's not a concern for us as we are already AIHTS compliant but things could be interesting for US Trappers who aren't. It sounds to me that NAFA won't buy non-certified fur from regions that don't have AIHTS, or some other approved certification, legislated. I'm just hearing about this now but I'm sure that US Trapping Associations have taken notice of this. Interesting stuff.
Dave could be very interesting, after watching Klondike trapping, Yukon, and Mountain Men, could not believe the US were all using old rusted long spring leg hold traps for marten etc.
It's been brought up on some of the US based FB groups. They aren't very happy, but surely the writing has been on the wall for a while. Time to catch up.
The US has something in place called "Best Management Practices" (BMP). I don't know anything about it or if it even comes close to AIHTS guidlines but if it doesn't, I think Trappers there should have a serious look at AIHTS. If this is the direction that NAFA is taking I wonder how long before FHA and fur buyers do the same thing. If they don't, will there be less fur on the market making our fur more valuable? Hmmmmm.....
