pretty rare but it does happen . there was a bow hunter killed near Bergen a few years back was there not? Having said that every black bear Ive seen books it out of there . Just the one in its den stayed put

So just a thought! If I was to be going out to a certain area that held Black or Brown bears I would be calling local F&W to see if they are aware of any bear activity or above normal bear activity. Conversation w/F&W would possibly give a guy a bit of a heads up in my mind prior to heading into bear country.

Goggle James Gary Shelton and buy his books. Best bear defense books I have ever read. He recommends two cans of bear spray and a 12 gauge with slugs.
He investigated lots of bear encounters in B.C. I would like to take one of his courses on bear defense.

Here in Sask we don't need anything fancy like guns or spray, a simple wine bottle is all that neccessary to give that ol' bear a good azz whoppin.

If there is one thing that living here has taught me, most negative encounters seem to end up posiitve if you are drunk, so just bring a massive bottle of your finest and everything will be a-ok.

I usually camp alone and feel better if I have a horse or a dog with me to detect a bear before I do.
At night I hook up a trip line tied to an battery powered alarm that is in the tent with me. This way I maybe will have time get my bear spray ready. I will not leave my tent if a bear shows up. I have horizontal slit vents on all sides of my tarp shelter so I can watch a bear and with one hand put the spray can outside and spray him. Maybe not a good idea if he is close enough to bite my hand off.

I set a perimeter of these up; on the ground and in the trees. I feel a weird vibe anytime when I'm in my tent, I cook one or all of these off.

I use the same defense I do against cougars.

My good looks and charm.

So far, the only cougar attacks have been by really old, snaggle toothed ones that looked way better through beer glasses the night before, and the bears just want to talk about relationship issues over a few beer. I've escaped unscathed, except for the cloying scent of gross perfume/aftershave that sometimes clung to my clothes.

The claymore was renamed to meet the requirements of the Ottawa Accord. More then a name change, the mine can no longer be set up with a trip wire or other method other then command detonated.

A friend used to hunt elk and moose with me quite a bit for many years carried 60 rounds of .338 WinNag ammo on his person at all times in the bush, slept with a loaded .357 in the tent, and strung a 24 inches high 50,000 volt bear deterrent electric fence around the tent,,,

One September night , the hills were echoing with bugling elk , well the paranoid freak gets up and crawls out if the tent to take a pizz ,,,

Unloads a hot heavy stream on his own 50,000 volt bear fence, the shock knocks him 20 feet back on his azz, he screams so loud his echo came back from the hills for several minutes,

Damm near pizzed myself laughing,,

Paranoid freaks, gotta lovem ,

Oh, and he was a senior officer in the RCMP , more lmao,

Artie, I agree Shelton is a real expert on bear attacks, both black and grizz. His job was to train Park Wardens how to deal with aggressive bears and how to properly dispose of them with buckshot and slugs. I always thought Herrero was full of sh__, he always thought all bear attacks in Alberta were caused by garbage dumps in National parks, I think his books belong in the those dumps.
