Default 243win powder choice HELP...

My 243 is my main coyote rifle and we are looking at reloading now, but with all the powder choices out there, is there one for the 243 that u guys love and why
My main bullet is the 70gr nosler ballistic tip, with the 58gr hornady v-max my second reputable choice
My rifle is a stainless savage axis with a 22"barrel and 1-9.25twist

Powder choices are:
Hodgson varget
IMR 4064
IMR 4166
IMR 4350

I need something that isn't temp sensitive cause we are out in -35 to plus 25 temps

Thanks for any advice u can give me guys!

I have the exact same barrel length & twist-rate (Savage Model 14) and shoot the exact same bullet.

I find that 4064 was/is giving me the most accurate results... My load will shoot MOA or better.

It's still just as accurate, but the velocity has changed (so had the temp) since initial chronograph testing.

Albeit, I haven't really given Varget a really thorough shake-down. Only mild testing.

This is my load, start lower and work your way up...

Brass - Hornady trimmed to 2.035"
Powder - IMR 4064 @ 43.8 grains
Bullet - Hornady 58gr Vmax
Primer - currently CCI #200, going back to Winchester WLR
COAL - 2.620" to bullet tip (not ogive) +/- 0.002"

Good luck hunting !

Smile The first 2

My problem has always been getting the components that I want, but Varget is as good as they say and my favorite is Mr. Lincoln's powder IMR in 4064 (Improved Military Rifle)

I have been using IMR4895 in my son's Weatherby Vangaurd. With SST's and Hornady Varmint bullets I was getting just over 1/2" 3 shot groups. I have IMR4166 that I use in my 308 and I have been thinking about trying it in the 243 as well. I've done some reading and it seems like a good choice there as well.

Where can I find the burn rate chart? I've looked for it but I must be searching for the wrong thing. Does it list all the different manufacturers rates or is it limited to one?

Varget as first choice out of those , then 4064. I haven't used 4166 yet and 4350 is a tad slow for the lighter bullets.
I use a lot of RL-15 but I bought lots years ago when it was easy to get.

IMR 4166,RL-15 and Varget all yield about exactly the same pressures using a .243 70 gr Sierra ... according to Quickload.

I think I'm gonna try IMR 4166 after my supply of 4064 runs out... They're right beside each other on the burn-rate chart.

Gonna save my Varget for my 75gr Vmax loads, it's working great for those bullets.

I'm no reloading guru or anything, and I'm sure there is lots that I can do better for reloading but I am just over 1/2" (0.530", 0.532", 0.533") 3 shot groups out of my 308 and about 3/4" groups out of my wife's 308 with IMR 4166. Factory barrels. I'm sure I can get them better than that still to but they're decent for now.

I was using 43.4 grains, Federal cases, Federal 210 primers, Barnes TTSX 168gr, 2.785" to tip. The wife's rifle was the same except 44.4 grains.

Next up I may try out some different primers. I have some looking and questions about it though. What potential benefits or drawbacks I'd have from a magnum primer.

It appears someone forgot to deduct the caliber diameter from that group.
Maybe .287 ?

I've heard of lots of people using Magnum primers instead of Large Rifle... As a matter of fact, it was suggested I switch to Magnum or atleast back to Winchester WLR (from CCI 200) which are supposed to be the "hottest" Large Rifle primers.

I can't see changing to mag primers providing a major ignition benefit in small or medium sized cases, even with ball powders. Often the reverse can be true.
Paying xtra attention to neck tension and bullet concentricity usually pays bigger dividends in the accuracy department . That's been my experience anyway.

Is there a primer burn chart like there is for the powders?

I need to get a set up for annealing but that's going to have to wait a bit. And after that it may be a concentricy set up. For now, changing primers could be an easy, cheap way of making things better. Of course it could make things worse as well but that's part of testing these things out. But if someone has tried already, no sense wasting time or money on it, might as well learn from their experiences.

I have used win 760 in cold weather and magnum primers with very good success. Since it's a varmint load I don't expect to use it in +20° weather where I think the temperature sensitive part comes in.
