Crownland Shooting Spots That Are Accessible During Winter Around Calgary?
So I would kinda like to go to crown land and do some shooting with some reactive targets as I would like to try them out (safely of crouse). However, even though I have the iHunter map, I am too worried about getting my ass stuck in the middle of nowhere as I only have a 1wd (no locking diff) truck that gets stuck in the snow very easily.
Any advice/links to google maps of a place that is accessible during winter with my type of vehicle?

McClean comes to mind, but you must be 1 KM off the gravel road going to Millarville. Come to think of it, that road may be shut down during winter.
You could hike in from the parking lot to the 1 KM mark, but you will need to clean up after yourself to alleviate being part of the problem.
I've done it West of the parking areas, but always travelled in by quad and always bring out more garbage than supplies I bring in. Gonna be easier now with a brand new (garbage) box for the quad.

With the ranges being shut down, these days a nice shooting spot is creeping up in value. Still not up there with your favourite honey hole but similar concept.
My advice is get out and explore. If you can sell your current vehicle and get something 4wd capable, that would definitely help.

You might want to check into the legalities of using reactionary targets on public land in Alberta.

It depends on the particular area, and in some cases on the time of year, but there are bans on exploding targets in some areas, at some times.

So where would you go to find out if it's allowed?
Fire ban time makes sense.
I'm still surprised that they let us Canadians play with at all.

Well, I just got myself a Savage 64 at the BMO center today. I am more interested in hunting grouse right now (Am Mi'Kamq, harvesting rights) for me and my mom to put cheap meat in the freezer.
I haven't really had anybody to me be able to show me the ropes so I am a bit lost. I do have the ihunter app to help me out, other than that am not sure were to go.

I don't use reactionary targets, but if I wanted to, I would contact AEP, as well as the county/municipality that you intend to shoot in, to see if there are any restrictions in the particular area.

Direwolf: Might be a good idea to call the area officer for permission. Could be you will be given permission to a designated area.

The grouse will be nesting and laying eggs soon. Better off waiting till fall after they produce more broods. Grouse can be pretty lean now from eating winter diet. Bush bunnies might be a better bet.

I like to keep the the whole dressed bird as well as the heart, gizzard and liver so it takes longer than a rabbit. A long time ago an oldtimer showed me this method. Rabbits can be cleaned and skinned pretty quick...

That is not what the links say. I know some Forest Officers..................they would turn down the request every time. People who want to use reactive targets won't want to take these targets into the backcountry.......they'll be used closer to roads, where they can offload their stuff and set it up. I was at a gun range last year and someone thought it was a good idea to shoot them up just outside the confines of the gun range. Hilarious for those who use them, not so much for those unsuspecting the clamour that goes with them. It's another case of govt interceding due to those few who abuse common sense.

You want to shot grouse at this time of year??  Just because they are easy to butcher? Your willing to shoot some of the remaining grouse that survived winter when they are soon to mate and reproduce the years new crop of birds.......whats wrong with you?

Whats that got to do with anything. Ethics are not race based. I grew up and hung out with 'Mi'Kamq' back when they were called Micmac and Maliseet. Back then if you went and did what he was proposing this time of year an elder or somebody would kick your ass.

This has to be a troll, nobody is driving from Calgary out to Mclean to shoot some grouse for "cheap meat" chicken is a lot cheaper at the grocery store.
